Autumn has arrived with its lovely crisp days, cool nights and gorgeous fall foliage. Many people celebrate the autumn season by decorating their front porch. Pumpkins, cornstalks, pilgrims, witches, goblins and other traditional autumn decor start making their appearance, welcoming guests into the home and delighting those who pass by. I love a simple display of pumpkins and chrysanthemums, but you may like more elaborate arrangements. Here are a few favorite front porch fall decorating ideas.
Front Porch Fall Decorating Ideas
Start at your front door
An autumn wreath hanging on the front door traditionally represents the season and always looks charming.
You can buy a ready-made wreath or make your own using a combination of materials such as grapevines, bittersweet, leaves, flowers, nuts, pine cones and gourds, finished off with an elegant bow. Colored corn also looks festive hanging on a front door.

Paint your front door
Wreaths are great for a quick front door decor change. But what if you’d like a bigger change? Paint your front door a fall color. It might be a bit more expensive and a couple hours of work, but WOW! You’ll absolutely love the difference. Look at this bright orange front door: it screams fall!
Pumpkins
Nothing is more traditional for autumn decor than pumpkins. Arrange a display of pumpkins, different sizes and shapes. You can leave them au naturel, paint faces on them or carve them for lighting up after dark.
Some pumpkins in a large basket, a pile of pumpkins in the corner, some pumpkins resting in a chair or atop a stool – all will look great and give your front porch a very festive touch of autumn and Halloween.

Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums add the perfect decorating touch to any front porch – simple yet elegant and bursting with beautiful autumn colors. Great for curb appeal too.
I have lots of chrysanthemums planted by my front door. We bought several to decorate one year and just planted them. We enjoy them every year now! no extra work, and no extra cost. Here’s a quick look at least year’s blooms!
Are your chrysanthemums fading after a beautiful fall color? Here’s how to trim mums to keep them healthy.
Props
Props come in handy for enhancing your autumn decorating. Old wood boxes, baskets, crocks, wagons, carts, wheelbarrows, weathered barn doors, sections of fence, wooden wagon wheels, cast iron cauldrons, rustic tables, rocking chairs – all work great as background props and containers for displaying pumpkins, gourds and chrysanthemums or as freestanding decorations by themselves.
- Cornstalks make great decorator props, adding some height and an easy-to-work-with neutral color. They make the perfect background when featuring decorative pieces from pumpkins and gourds to witches and scarecrows. They fit nicely into corners, an added bonus when porch space is limited.
- Hay bales make great props also, again a neutral color and an ideal place for setting up your autumn décor or propping up a stuffed straw man.
Use available space
If you have a large front porch you can create an elaborate autumn display complete with wagons and carts, even a haunted house theme if you want.
Small porch? You can still do some great decorating. Use available corners for leaning tall decorations such as cornstalks, witches and goblins. Scatter some pumpkins, gourds and leaves at the base. Drape a spider-filled web nearby. Also take advantage of the front steps to create a lovely display of colorful pumpkins and chrysanthemums.
