In a Hotel Recently? 7 Signs You Brought Bed Bugs Home

You just returned from a trip, unpacked your bags, and settled back into your routine. But sometimes a souvenir comes home that you did not pay for at the gift shop.

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. They hide in luggage, clothing, and travel pillows, waiting to set up camp in a new location. Spotting them early makes removal much easier. Here are the signs to watch for.

Warning: This article contains images of creepy crawly bugs that might make your skin feel itchy.

1. Unexplained Red Bites in a Line

Waking up with itchy red welts is often the first clue. Mosquitoes or spiders might bite once or twice randomly, but bed bugs tend to be methodical feeders. They often bite in a straight line or a zigzag pattern, sometimes humorously referred to as “breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”

These bites usually appear on exposed skin like arms, neck, or shoulders. If itchy spots appear overnight without any buzzing insects in the room, take a closer look at the mattress.

2. Tiny Blood Stains on Your Sheets

It sounds gross because it is. When bed bugs feed, they can get crushed if you roll over in your sleep. This leaves behind small, rusty, or bright red blood smears on pillowcases and sheets.

These stains are often tiny, sometimes just a dot, but finding unexplained blood on bedding is a strong indicator of unwanted activity.

3. Dark, Rust-Colored Spots on the Mattress

Bed bugs leave behind fecal matter after digesting a meal. These spots look different from the blood stains mentioned above. They appear as small, dark brown or black dots that resemble marks from a felt-tip marker.

You will typically find these clustered along mattress seams, tag edges, or on the box spring. Unlike dirt, these spots might bleed like marker ink if wiped with a wet rag.

4. Discarded Shell Casings

As young bed bugs (nymphs) grow, they shed their exoskeletons. These look like hollow, translucent versions of the bug itself.

They are very light, appearing pale yellow or amber in color. You might find them accumulating in the corners of the mattress, under the bed, or even in drawer joints near the bed. Finding these skins means a growing population is present.

5. Tiny White Eggs or Eggshells

If you have sharp eyes or a magnifying glass, look for eggs. Bed bug eggs are extremely small (about 1mm), pearly white, and oval-shaped. They look a bit like a grain of rice, but much smaller.

Female bed bugs lay their eggs in cracks and crevices to keep them safe. Finding these indicates active breeding, which requires immediate attention before the numbers multiply.

6. A Sweet, Musty Odor

A heavy infestation often produces a distinct smell. Bed bugs release pheromones that smell unpleasantly sweet and musty. Some people describe it as smelling like rotting raspberries, coriander, or almonds.

If a bedroom suddenly develops a strange, old-towel scent that cleaning does not remove, investigate the furniture closely.

7. Seeing the Bugs Themselves

Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed. They are flat, oval, and reddish-brown. They do not fly or jump, but they crawl quickly. While they are nocturnal and prefer to hide during the day, you might spot one if you dismantle the bed frame or look behind the headboard.

They also like to hide in electrical outlets, behind wallpaper, or in drawer joints.

Finding any of these signs can be stressful, but acting fast helps. If evidence appears, wash all bedding and clothing in the hottest water possible and dry on high heat.

Contacting a professional pest control service is usually the most effective route, as DIY methods often miss hidden eggs. Prompt action keeps a small problem from becoming a household takeover.
