Design Trends Homebuyers Will Be Looking for in 2025

Trends change from year to year and what homebuyers were looking for in 2024 is yesterday’s news. Instead, new trends are now cropping up and they’re in hot demand.

If you’re considering selling your home, staying on top of these trends can help it go under contract quicker, especially if you’re willing to make some of the changes that appeal to buyers. That’s not to say you have to overhaul your home. But you can make it stand out among others on the market.

To curate this list, we looked to reputable sites, like the National Association of Realtors (NAR), Thumbtack, and Houzz for design trends and what buyers are looking for in 2025.

Touches of Nature

There’s just something about the great outdoors that resonates with many people. In 2025, according to a Thumbtack guide, people will be looking for a touch of the outdoors inside, whether in the form of lots of natural light or warm, earthy color palettes.

That also means lots of plants to brighten up the space.

More Vintage, Please!

Vintage pieces have always been popular, but according to 43% of experts surveyed by Thumbtack, it will be making a big impact this year. In additional to floral wallpaper accenting spaces, homebuyers will be looking for vintage pieces to fill their homes.

This could include furniture, heirlooms, or antique pieces that add nostalgia to spaces throughout the house.

Kitchens Remain Top Priority

The kitchen remains one of buyers’ top priorities when shopping for a home and the trends for 2025 include some nifty trends. For one, they’re looking to more colorful kitchens with greens and blues over the monochrome black and white or neutral colors of years past.

Shoppers are also looking for whimsical, yet functional touches like range alcoves that offer additional storage right next to the stovetop.

Wet Rooms

If you’ve never heard of the concept of a wet room, you’re not alone. It’s not typically common in homes, but is growing in popularity as more homeowners are seeking a taste of luxury.

A wet room combines a shower and a tub in a single enclosed space with proper drainage, and here’s the kicker: they don’t even have to be in the bathroom!

Saunas

Saunas are also part of the increasing wellness trend homeowners are seeking to embrace. These relaxing spaces allow people to unwind and destress without having to go to the spa.

According to Houzz, home saunas were a hit at the 2024 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, and more people are searching for information about them these days.

Arches

Decorative arches lend a touch of elegance to spaces, softening them up. The Houzz report details that they are showing up more and more in searches and sought-after inspiration images.

Arches aren’t limited to doorways or entryways, either. You can infuse them in windows, in the kitchen cabinets, or carve out a sitting space.

Wooden Architecture

As we mentioned neutral palette schemes are heading (at least temporarily) the way of the dinosaur and buyers now want some added warmth in their homes. That comes in the form of wood architecture.

Think ceiling beams, wood paneling (but modernized), and trim throughout the home, especially in well-traveled spaces like the living and dining rooms, and kitchens.

Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens have an incredible return on investment (ROI), 100%, according to the NAR Remodeling Impact Report on outdoor features.

You don’t have to go all-out either. A simple setup with countertops, maybe a refrigerator, and a sitting space is enough to boost a home’s value and offer another element other houses on the market may not have.

Unique Tile

Hardwood floors always steal the show in a home, especially if they’re classic and well-maintained. Yet, unique tile pairings are also making an appearance on the list of shoppers’ demands. For example, Zellige and terra cotta tiles fit in with the colorful and warm tones on the shopping list.

But they’re not just for the floor, either. They look gorgeous on the wall, especially in bathrooms, creating a multidimensional look.

Painted Stairs

Some buyers are looking for those unique accent pieces in a home. Enter painted staircases. Typically the stairs themselves aren’t painted, but the side and space around them are.

That creates an accent piece in the middle of the room and adds a whimsical touch to the space.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Along with the reconnection to nature, homebuyers are seeking more outdoor living spaces. Think of a pergola or trellis with built-in lighting as a relaxing or entertaining space.

These outdoor living spaces also come in the form of a fully-stocked patio or porch, or a three-season room where they can spend their days basking in the beautiful weather.

Native Landscapes

Don’t forget the curb appeal! Homebuyers are increasingly drawn to native and drought-resistant plants in their yards, giving them the lush green look without all of the added care that goes into maintaining them.

Putting just a bit of care into your landscape can help your home sell that much quicker.
