Deer breaks into home.

Deer Smashes Through Apartment Window as Wisconsin Police Respond to Call

As fall weather really settles in, a lot of wildlife starts to get into its seasonal routines. For some animals, like bears, that means consuming a lot of extra calories to stay nice and full during their winter hibernation. For other animals, that means kicking off mating season.

Deer fall into the category of animals that become a lot more active in the fall as they begin their mating season. They also tend to have to work a little harder to find food in the fall, and that may mean wandering into places that deer aren’t as familiar with.

For one deer in Wisconsin, that meant venturing into someone’s apartment. The incident was caught on the body-worn camera of an Appleton Police Department officer and later shared on Facebook.

The unusual moment was about more than witnessing the four-legged burglar breaking and entering, and the police department also added a reminder about deer activity this time of year and how residents needed to be more vigilant, especially while driving.

A Deer Broke Into a Person’s Apartment

The Facebook post included a video that showed several people walking around the outside of an apartment. One officer can be heard saying that they spotted the deer, and he walked toward another officer while explaining what he saw.

But before anything could be done to help the lost animal, the sound of breaking glass could be heard as the scared deer crashed through a window. The explosive escape ended with the deer racing away from the bewildered officers as they watched the animal head to the woods.

Deer Mating Season Has Begun

The caption that was shared with the video explained that the deer had appeared uninjured when it exited the apartment and that the landlord had been informed about the broken window.

“While a deer entering an apartment is certainly unusual, increased deer movement this time of year is not,” the caption explained. “Wisconsin DNR identifies October and November as the months when most deer-vehicle collisions occur, as deer become more active during the fall breeding season. Deer are also most active around dawn and dusk.”

As such, the police department instructed drivers to be very aware of their surroundings while on the road, saying that they should “slow down, remain alert, and scan the roadsides for deer.”

And the numbers back up this warning as well. According to State Farm, the insurance company says that it paid out around $1.9 billion in animal-vehicle collision claim costs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The company also said that there were certain states where the collisions were higher, placing West Virginia in the top spot when it comes to these types of accidents.
