House near train tracks.

Would You Buy a House Right Next to Train Tracks? This Listing Has People Divided

Real estate agents like to say it’s all about location, location, location. But what happens when a new listing has a surprising location that could be a major drawback for most buyers?

TikToker @gravesjenny has posed this very question to her followers, asking them if the location of her new listing would be a dealbreaker for homebuyers. She even filmed a video of the home, slowly panning from the home to the train tracks running directly alongside it.

The noise was pretty loud in the video, but that didn’t even seem to be the major deterrent to the people who responded in the comments. Instead, many of them shared other safety concerns about the home that would keep them from buying.

Surprisingly enough, others said they had lived near train tracks and would love the opportunity to do so again.

Just two days after posing the question on Oct. 18, more than 4,100 people had responded to Graves to share their opinion about the train tracks.

“Yes, I’d be scared of my children playing outside,” one mom wrote.

Another person had a different safety concern, writing, “As a person that worked on a train derailment crew, I would never buy a house that close to a mainline.”

A Lot of People Like Living Near Trains

While there were quite a lot of “nos” in the responses, it seemed like there were almost more people who said that they loved the idea.

“I had an apartment complex next to a train, and it was so soothing,” one person wrote. “Rainy dark nights and hearing the engine/whistle was my fav. So nostalgic!”

“You would think that it would bother you, but after a couple weeks, you won’t even know that it’s there,” another added.

Another commenter said they would take almost any location for the chance to own a home. “I’ll live next to a crack den if I can find one for less than $300,000, bestie,” they joked.

Living Next to Train Tracks Can Affect a Home’s Value

All kidding aside, there can be some financial reasons why someone would or wouldn’t want to live near train tracks. Definitive Valuations says that living near railroad tracks can affect a home’s value.

That being said, sometimes being close to a train can have the opposite effect, especially in urban areas where that proximity could put you near a train station for easy commuting. Of course, the real determining factor is going to come down to how a potential homebuyer feels about the home. If the comments section on this post is any indication, it seems like there are more than enough people who would jump at the opportunity to live near the tracks.
