15-Year-Old Golden Retriever Regains Mobility After Owner Introduces Him to Pilates
Weasel the dog may be 15 years old, but this golden retriever isn’t ready to retire from his favorite energetic activities just yet. After experiencing a sudden decline in mobility, the senior dog has made remarkable progress with help from an unlikely exercise routine: Pilates.
His owner, a certified Pilates instructor based in Hawaii, took movements and techniques normally taught to human clients and adapted them not just to dogs but to Weasel’s particular needs; the program was designed with the goal of helping Weasel regain his strength. Three months later, she says he’s recovered almost all the mobility he’d lost.
Weasel’s rehabilitation journey went on to capture attention and win hearts on social media, where videos show him using equipment typically found in Pilates studios. His progress has even earned him the affectionate nickname of the “Pawlates King.”
And while the exercises look unconventional, there was a professional influence behind them. Weasel’s owner drew inspiration from movements recommended during his veterinary rehabilitation sessions.

Dear Weasel’s troubles began in May 2026, when he started rapidly losing mobility, especially in his hind legs. His owner, Jillian Loustaunau, sought help from a veterinary professional specializing in acupuncture and physical therapy.
As this went on, Loustaunau, who runs Movmint Pilates in Kailua, Hawaii, noticed something interesting: she recognized similarities between Weasel’s rehabilitation exercises and the movements she taught her clients.
So, could the connection go further still?
Loustaunau began bringing him into the studio, introducing him to adapted exercises using a Pilates reformer and other specialized equipment. Initially, the goal was to preserve the dwindling and diminished mobility Weasel still had. However, Loustaunau began noticing substantial improvement. After around three months, she reported that Weasel had recovered nearly all his previous mobility.
His progress has been documented on his Instagram account, @paw.lates, where followers can watch the senior dog practice movements involving careful stepping and stretching.
The story also reached a much wider audience when The Washington Post shared a video on Facebook, showing Weasel making progress through his unusual exercise routine.
Weasel’s Recovery Has Inspired Other Dog Owners
Loustaunau’s approach has attracted considerable attention, with one September Instagram video drawing more than 1.8 million views, according to Scoop Upworthy.
The instructor has since developed an online program called “Pawlates 101” for owners interested in learning about adapted movement exercises for their dogs.
As reported by the New York Post, Loustaunau explained, “We do this so he can run, fetch, and swim at some of the best beaches in the world.”
Veterinary rehabilitation often includes exercises designed to improve strength and mobility, but each dog’s needs are different. While Weasel has made impressive progress, owners should consult a veterinary professional before attempting similar routines with their own pets, as exercises that benefit one animal may be unsuitable or even harmful to another.
At an age when many golden retrievers typically slow down significantly, Weasel is still enjoying his most favorite activities in the whole wide world. His training sessions have become part of that routine, with his owner continuing to share updates on his progress. Long may the Pawlates King reign.
