South Lake Tahoe residents are used to sharing their streets with black bears, but some encounters are cuter than others. A couple of homeowners recently filmed two bear cubs that found a backyard tetherball and started playing with it. They batted it back and forth like it had been put there just for them. Their mother wandered nearby while they played. The short clip is about as charming as bear footage gets.
It’s one of the most adorable things you’ll see. The cubs take turns swatting the ball as it swings around the pole. They chase it, lose it, and go right back for another swat at it, just like human kids might. All the while, the mom keeps a watchful eye from off to the side, letting the cubs be cubs.
Moments like this are more common in South Lake Tahoe than almost anywhere else. Black bears there have grown remarkably comfortable around people, drifting through yards and driveways as if they belong. A tetherball in a backyard is just one more curiosity in a landscape full of them. That comfort is what makes the clip so fun. It is also what makes wildlife experts a little uneasy.
That tension is the real story underneath the cute one. The same comfort that puts an adorable video on your feed is, for the bears, a slow-building problem. Those experts tend to see a scene like this from two angles. One is why Tahoe bears behave so differently from bears almost everywhere else. The other is what makes a clip this harmless not quite as harmless as it looks.
Why Tahoe’s Black Bears Are So Playful
Tahoe’s black bears are the same species you would find deep in the forest and wilderness. They just act a lot more tame. They can be bold and oddly comfortable around humans, too. That’s all due to a behavior known as habituation. But the reason stems from humans, not bears: a steady supply of human food and garbage. That teaches the bears that certain places are safe to eat at, including South Lake Tahoe.
Bear moms are all about their cubs. In fact, a mother black bear in the Tahoe basin often raises three or four cubs at once, teaching them where to find food and navigate the world. Sometimes that includes learning how to play with some human toys. It’s possible that these bears had that kind of experience growing up so they know how to handle human playthings.
The Serious Side of a Cute Bear Video
Unfortunately, when it comes to bear country, a comfortable bear can mean a doomed one. Wildlife agencies have a blunt saying for it, that a fed bear is a dead bear. Once a bear links people with food, it tends to keep coming back. And each time it does come back it gets bolder. Eventually, it can be labeled as a problem. And that’s when the difficult decisions have to be made.
You should keep your distance from these bears, no matter how friendly they appear. Black bear attacks are usually rare, true, and usually they happen when someone comes between a mother and cubs. So if you see something like this in the wild, just stay away. Film from a distance if you have to, but don’t get up close and personal. You don’t want to disrupt them and you don’t want anything to happen to you.
