Family convicted in prostitution and money laundering case.

Four Family Members Were Just Convicted After a Years-Long Investigation into Massage Parlor Prostitution

In news you don’t hear every day, four members of the Ma family have been convicted in a prostitution and money laundering case. According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, the Ma family was convicted for their role in an illicit massage business, which was found to be a cover for a commercial sex operation as well as a money laundering facility.

The four family members were tried by a jury and found guilty of multiple felony offenses as part of the case. “We are deeply grateful to the jurors for the extraordinary time, care, and hard work they devoted to this case,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Rikole Kelly said in a Sept. 30 press release about the case.

Kelly went on to thank one of the victims who spoke up about her harrowing ordeal as a victim of human trafficking.

According to the district attorney’s office, investigators had been looking into these crimes with the Ventura Police Department and other agencies since 2020, highlighting just how long it took to bring the Mas to justice. Here’s what we know.

Law Enforcement Found Out About the Case Thanks to a ‘Whistleblower’

The press release says that officials were alerted to the situation in 2020 when several different law enforcement agencies received letters from an anonymous whistleblower. The letters alleged that there was suspected human trafficking and prostitution taking place at several massage parlors across the county, which included establishments like A+ Massage in Port Hueneme and Miracle Massage in Ventura.

Eventually, that led officials from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, Ventura Police Department, Ventura County Human Trafficking Task Force, local law enforcement agencies, and other city governments involved in the Landlord Engagement Program to get involved.

Four Family Members Were Charged

Xiangwei Ma, Xiangdong Ma, Li Ma, and Ming Ma were charged with varying felony offenses, including but not limited to pimping, mortgage fraud, and money laundering.

All four were convicted by a jury, which saw Xiangwei Ma convicted of pimping, mortgage fraud, and nine counts of money laundering, which could result in up to 17 years in state prison. She will be sentenced on Oct. 23.

Xiangdong Ma was convicted of pimping and five counts of money laundering, which could result in up to 13 years in state prison. He will also be sentenced on Oct. 23.

Li Ma was convicted of pimping and one count of money laundering, which could result in up to eight years and eight months in state prison. She will be sentenced on Nov. 2.

Ming Ma was convicted of pimping and two counts of money laundering, which could result in up to 11 years and four months in state prison. He will be sentenced on Nov. 4.

The district attorney’s office notes that it is targeting illicit massage businesses and their role as fronts for human trafficking and other crimes. “This case demonstrates our commitment to use the full weight of this office to hold these offenders accountable,” District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said in the statement.

People Celebrated the News on Facebook

When the district attorney’s office shared the post on Facebook, people took a moment to thank officials for their roles in the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of the four family members.

While a lot of people asked questions about what would happen to the family after their sentences were up, others shared names of other venues they would like to see officials look into. “Where was their business? I wish they would close the one on Arboles by Trader Joe’s,” one person wrote.

Hopefully this news gives the victims a little bit of closure after what sounds like a long and harrowing experience while also serving as a warning to others who may follow in the Ma family’s footsteps.
