This Museum Just Opened a First-of-Its-Kind Holographic Dinosaur Experience

If you have a dinosaur fan in the family, you’ll want to check out a pretty unusual new experience in Houston. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is showing Dinosaur Discoveries: A Holographic Adventure inside its Wortham Giant Screen Theatre.

The experience uses 3D holographic technology and video mapping to bring life-size dinosaurs to life in the theater, and you don’t need any special glasses to view it.

HMNS partnered with BASE Xperiential to create what the museum calls the first-ever HoloTheater. Two large screens work together to put the dinosaurs right in front of the audience.

The show is about 25 minutes long and is currently playing at the museum.

Guests follow a young paleontologist named Maggie as she learns about the discoveries that have changed what scientists know about dinosaurs. The story covers more than 140 years of research and even some of the disagreements that happened along the way.

Meanwhile, holographic dinosaurs appear in front of the audience as the story plays out. BASE Xperiential says its HoloTheater combines giant-screen movies, sound and holographic images.

The Theater Is Pretty Big Too

The holograms aren’t the only thing making this experience feel larger than life.

The Wortham Giant Screen Theatre has a 60-by-80-foot screen, along with 4K digital projection and a six-track sound system. HMNS says images on the screen can reach nearly eight stories high.

For Dinosaur Discoveries, the museum says two towering screens come together to show the dinosaurs.

Houston Gets The Special Preview

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is currently calling its run of Dinosaur Discoveries a World Premiere Special Preview before releasing the experience elsewhere.

The experience is still listed as playing now, with additional showtimes currently scheduled into November. Keep in mind that guests should arrive at least 15 minutes before the show starts, as late entry isn’t allowed.
