A routine patrol in Floresville, Texas, briefly turned into a pickup basketball game when one police officer spotted a group of kids shooting hoops. Unfortunately for Cpl. Barrera, the Floresville Police Department isn’t exactly preparing to announce his second career in the NBA.
According to the department, Barrera stopped while patrolling after noticing the kids playing and decided to join them for a few minutes. What followed involved plenty of laughs, even if the department admitted that apparently quite a few of his shots involved absolutely no contact with the rim.
The department joked that it would have loved to say Barrera “dominated the court,” but his collection of air balls apparently made that impossible. His basketball skills might need some work, but the brief stop accomplished something considerably more important than putting points on the board.
Floresville police shared the interaction as an example of how small moments between officers and the people they serve can help build relationships within a community. Judging by the reactions from some of the children’s families, a few minutes of basketball managed to leave quite an impression.

The wholesome clip posted to the Floresville Police Department Facebook page shows Cpl. Barrera talking to a group of kids while holding a basketball. You can’t exactly hear what they’re saying, but it’s clear that he is trying to come up with a set of ground rules with the children.
After a brief discussion, Barrera hands one of the kids the ball, and they proceed to play whatever it is they agreed on. You don’t see Barrera shoot any shots, but I’m going to choose to believe that he did much better than he lets on.
What I find to be very funny is the fact that you can see him constantly looking up and down the streets, likely to check for oncoming cars. It shows that even when he’s having fun with the community, he’s still in cop mode.
Comments and Reactions to Cpl. Barrera’s Basketball Game
The response was overwhelmingly positive, with several people thanking Barrera for taking a few minutes to interact with the kids rather than simply continuing his patrol. One commenter called it something “our youth needs more of,” while another summed up the general feeling with, “This is what we need more of!!!!”
Even better, relatives of some of the kids actually found the post and explained just how much the encounter meant to them. One mother said her son came home excited to tell her that a police officer had played basketball with him and his cousins, while another person said her young nephews were similarly thrilled about the surprise game.
Others already seemed familiar with Barrera’s approach to community policing, including one parent who said the officer had previously visited her home and spoken with her son several times. Barrera might have walked away without improving his shooting percentage, but based on those reactions, the kids probably weren’t going to remember the air balls nearly as much as the officer who stopped to play with them.
