Starlink Wi-Fi Will Soon Be Available to American Airline’s Entire Mainline Fleet
American Airlines is preparing to make a significant change to its in-flight internet service. The carrier has expanded its agreement with Starlink, with plans to install the satellite internet technology across its entire mainline fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft.
The project will cover more than 1,000 Airbus and Boeing planes, including aircraft used on long-distance international routes. Installations are expected to begin in early 2027, although the airline has not confirmed when the full rollout will be completed.
On Oct. 8, American Airlines announced that the expanded agreement will create one of the world’s largest fleets equipped with Starlink internet. The decision represents a significant expansion of an agreement announced just five months earlier, when American Airlines planned to bring Starlink to more than 500 Airbus aircraft.

The latest agreement includes more than 400 narrowbody Boeing aircraft, which are often used for domestic flights, along with over 130 widebody Boeing jets commonly used for longer routes.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides internet access through satellites in low Earth orbit. American says the technology is intended to support bandwidth-intensive activities such as streaming video. Combined with the airline’s 500-plus Airbus narrowbodies, the project covers a mainline fleet of more than 1,030 aircraft.
American Airlines plans to install Starlink’s Performance Aero Terminal, which the company says can support speeds of up to one gigabit per second per terminal. That figure is a technical maximum, not a guaranteed connection speed for individual passengers.
American says it plans to offer gate-to-gate connectivity, although the actual experience will depend on the rollout and service availability.
“Our customers have told us that dependable connectivity can make a meaningful difference in how they spend their time in the air,” said Heather Garboden, American’s chief customer officer.
Will Starlink Wi-Fi Be Free on American Airlines?
American already introduced complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi for members of its AAdvantage loyalty program earlier in 2026. The service, sponsored by AT&T, is available on much of the airline’s fleet.
According to an earlier American Airlines announcement, travelers can access eligible free Wi-Fi by signing in through the airline’s onboard internet portal. Joining AAdvantage is also free. However, the Oct. 8 Starlink announcement does not explicitly detail pricing for the new service.
American Eagle (smaller regional flights with AA) flights are not included in the new agreement. While American plans to install Starlink across its mainline fleet, the announcement makes no such commitment for its regional aircraft.
The airline says more than 165 million passengers travel on its mainline aircraft annually. With over 300 additional mainline planes expected to join the fleet in the coming years, the Starlink project could eventually affect an even larger number of travelers.
American expects to begin installations in early 2027, although it has not announced when the entire fleet will be equipped. Passengers will likely see the service introduced gradually as individual aircraft receive the technology.
