With pets and children in my home, I’m constantly cleaning, especially when they start bringing seasonal illnesses home. In the past, it wasn’t always easy to find cleaners that were safe for both my pets and my plants, but that has changed in the last few years.
Now, there are several products on the market designed to provide a deep clean with effective, yet gentle formulas so you don’t have to lock your pets up or move your plants. Best of all, there are no harsh chemicals in them, just proven ingredients that tackle small and large messes alike because, let’s be honest, with pets and plants, you’re bound to have a bit of both.
These are just some of the options I have explored over the past few years. As always, research the ingredients for sensitivities and follow the stated directions.
Enviro-One

Enviro-One is made with naturally derived ingredients, making the formula safe for use around pets and plants. It’s a multi-purpose cleaner that doesn’t contain any synthetic dyes or fragrances.
According to the company website, you can actually use this cleaner directly on your plants “without compromising their health.” Just make sure you follow the directions for diluting the formula.
Simple Green

Simple Green is another multi-purpose cleaner and degreaser that has been EPA Safer Choice certified. The formula is non-toxic and biodegradable.
Simple Green is also safe for use on plants when diluted, and some use it to remove build-up on the leaves — dirt and mold — and to help with pest control, namely ants.
Angry Orange

If you have pets, you’ll want a strong cleaning agent that’s capable of tackling the odors and messes they make, but without the toxicity and chemicals that can harm animals and plants.
The formula contains enzymatic bacteria to help break down stains and odors and leaves behind a citrusy scent.
Mrs. Meyer’s

This cleaning product line is made with biodegradable, plant-based ingredients, which are safe for both pets and plants.
It’s best to choose the gentle formulas the company offers, ones without dyes and essential oils, as some can be irritating for animals and foliage.
DIY Options

We’d be remiss not to mention some DIY solutions you can create at home. They use products you typically find in your pantry. All of these are safe for pets, but some may be a bit harsh on plants, depending on the acidity level.
Vinegar and Water

This is a great solution for helping to clean up pet messes, especially if you throw in a bit of baking soda on those tough odors. However, be very careful using vinegar around plants, and avoid direct contact as the acidity can damage both the roots and foliage.
Hydrogen Peroxide

When mixed with other ingredients, hydrogen peroxide can be an effective cleaning solution for stains. Gardeners also use it as an effective ingredient for helping to combat common issues like root rot and to stimulate plant growth. Dilution is key here, though. Too much can burn the foliage. Typically a 1:4 ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water is ideal.
