Old Man Appears Oblivious to Black Bear Sneaking up Behind Him
When a video goes viral in this day and age, it can be hard to tell whether it’s real or if it’s being faked. Between advanced AI and scripted content, it’s really challenging to tell what’s real.
However, that doesn’t make clips like the one shared by TikToker @jcubsden any less interesting, especially when they involve something as out of the ordinary as a senior citizen who doesn’t realize that a massive bear is sneaking up behind him. Fortunately, this clip appears to have a happy ending, but you have to worry about what could’ve happened if the bear hadn’t wandered off on its own accord.
Still, the video is wild enough that it has gone super viral, and it’s even been shared by outlets like The Weather Channel and Parade Pets. The Weather Channel seems to have some more insight into what was going on in the clip, claiming that the massive beast was just a mama bear trying to protect her cubs.
And while neither outlet has confirmed whether the video has been faked, it is still gaining a lot of traction. Here’s what we know.

The short clip features an older gentleman walking on the sidewalk with a brown paper bag in his hand. From across the street, a group of what appear to be bicycle riders can be heard calling to the man to try to get him to walk towards them.
Other people can be heard shouting at the bear before the man turned around to see what all of the fuss was about, quickening his pace as he walked out of frame. The bear then turned away and went back into the tree line, presumably back to her family.
“A man had a close encounter with a bear as he didn’t realize one was behind him, while people tried to alert him to the protective mother and her cubs foraging nearby,” the caption from The Weather Channel said.
People Couldn’t Help but Joke in the Comments
Since the man made it out of the encounter unscathed, people felt comfortable making fun of the entire situation. “Bro went from 1 mph to 2 mph,” one person joked about the moment he realized the bear was behind him.
“The bear: ‘What’s behind us,'” another person joked.
“We aspire to be this unbothered in life,” the account for the company Afterlife wrote in regard to the calm way the man handled the entire situation.
Black Bear Attacks Are Rare
The Weather Channel traced the footage back to British Columbia, where the government website says that attacks remain relatively rare. But that doesn’t mean that sightings are uncommon. According to reporting, it looks like the local government received 2,664 calls about black bears in July 2026 alone. And while they only responded to 212 calls, dozens of bears were killed or euthanized in the process.
This highlights just how cautious people need to be around these massive creatures. While they typically don’t mean anyone any harm, something as simple as getting between a mama and her cubs could result in serious injuries, if not death.
