Minimalism is the name of the game today, and more people are opting to live in smaller spaces. That comes with a conundrum, though: where do you put everything?
Here’s where you need to get creative and maximize the space you do have. But how do you do that? Believe it or not, it’s easier than it seems. All it takes is a few creative storage solutions and some magic tricks with mirrors and furniture, and you’ll find that you actually have more space than you thought.
We’ve got some tips to get you started.
Take Advantage of Vertical Space

Think about a typical home, whether yours, a friend’s, or a family member’s. Often, you’ll see plenty of bare walls, or simple artwork and pictures adorning them.
Many people fail to take advantage of vertical space, which can be a game changer if you live in a compact home or apartment. Floating shelves and organizers mounted to the wall provide storage space. If you prefer cabinets, opt for ones that go as high as you can find, preferably up to the ceiling, to take advantage of as much space as possible.
Choose Your Colors Carefully

Colors have a lot of impact when it comes to the appearance of size. For example, lighter colors tend to open up the space more, but that doesn’t mean you have to go with white.
Pastels, lighter shades of blue, gray, and green all work well to make your home appear bigger.
Get Creative With Your Storage

Getting creative with your storage is a must when dealing with smaller spaces. In the kitchen, you can take advantage of risers, baskets, and acrylic drawers for vertical space in cabinets.
In the living space, use storage ottomans. Buy a bed that has storage space underneath or even built-in drawers for your clothes. That will help eliminate the need for bulky dressers.
Be Smart With Furniture

When it comes to furniture in a small space, just say “no” to oversize, plush chairs and couches. They will take up too much room. Instead, opt for smaller seating with legs, as opposed to those that sit directly on the floor.
For tables, consider nesting options or those with built-in storage. These will give you more room to store your stuff and keep it out of sight.
Consider a Minimalist Approach

This is a good time to also consider minimalism. Do you have boxes that have moved with you for years, yet never been open? Is your closet full of clothes that haven’t fit in a decade?
Living in a smaller space means you will likely have to give some of these items up or you’ll have to rent a storage unit. Why not donate what you can and help someone else at the same time, rather than spend more money unnecessarily?
Use Mirrors to Create Illusion of Space

Even if you don’t have a lot of space, mirrors can help create an open feeling in a room through reflection. You don’t have to use full-size mirrors, either, unless, of course, you want them. Hang them strategically in your living space for the best results.
Just be careful not to hang too many mirrors. After all, this is your home, not a carnival fun house.
Don’t Forget the Corners

All too often, the corners of a home go ignored. But, they can be a vital part of opening up your space in a smaller dwelling. For example, instead of putting your furniture in the center of a room, use those corners.
Add bookshelves or corner shelves to spaces without furniture for built-in storage that won’t stick out like a sore thumb.
Use Natural Light to Your Advantage

Natural light can really emphasize a room and make it look larger, much like lighter paint colors do. One of the best ways to use it to your advantage is to leave windows unobstructed.
If you want curtains, choose sheer, lightweight ones. Keep them open during the day to let light in.
Create Zones in Your Home

Dividing your home into spaces, or zoning, is a good way to transform your space. Give each area a purpose, or perhaps multiple purposes, and use furniture or accent pieces, like rugs, to divide the space.
Doing so will make your home more organized, and when you’re working with little room, organization is a must.
