Kayaker Thought Fisherman Was Talking About Catfish — Then He Heard a Kitten Crying for Help

TikTok creator Carter Taylor had expected a quiet day on the water, spending time kayaking and fishing. Instead, his trip quickly turned into an unexpected animal rescue after he discovered a tiny kitten stranded in a tree.

Just minutes before getting on the water, another fisherman had mentioned that there was a cat in a tree. But with the noise from the nearby highway, Taylor misunderstood what he had been told.

“I kind of downplayed it and said, ‘Ah, well, I’m not much of a catfish guy, but thanks,’ wished him good luck, and went on my way,” Taylor explained.

It was only later, once he was out on the water, that the penny finally dropped.

“I realized he was talking about an ACTUAL cat,” Taylor said, explaining the moment that can also be heard in the video.

The misunderstanding could have easily meant Taylor simply carried on with his day. Instead, hearing the kitten’s cries prompted him to investigate.

Tiny Cries Lead Taylor to a Kitten in Trouble

While out on the water, Taylor began hearing faint cries and decided to follow the sound. As he paddled closer, he discovered that the noise was coming from a tiny kitten stranded in a tree.

The kitten was in a difficult position above the water, leaving Taylor concerned that she could fall. With no obvious way for the animal to safely get down, he decided to intervene.

Taylor paddled his kayak towards the tree and reached out to the frightened kitten. After some coaxing, she made her way towards him and climbed aboard the kayak.

The entire rescue was captured on camera, including Taylor’s realization that the “cat” he had been told about was not, in fact, a catfish.

Once safely aboard, the kitten stayed close to her rescuer as they made their way back to shore.

From Riverside Rescue to a New Home

What began as an unexpected encounter on the water soon became much more than a rescue.

After bringing the kitten safely back to shore, The Dodo reported that Taylor and his girlfriend took care of her, giving her food, cleaning her up and making sure she received veterinary attention. They named her Lucky, a fitting name given how close she had come to being left stranded.

The kitten was taken to a vet the following day, where she was found to be generally healthy and received antibiotics following her ordeal.

But Lucky’s story didn’t end with a trip to the vet. Taylor and his girlfriend eventually decided to adopt her, turning an unusual kayaking trip into the beginning of a permanent home for the rescued kitten.

Lucky also had to meet another member of the household, Taylor’s dog, Rigley. The pair appear to have settled in well together, with viewers particularly enjoying seeing the two animals interact.
