A neighbor’s report of a gunshot at a Grafton, Wisconsin, home led police to evacuate a woman and arrest a 61-year-old man, authorities said.
The Grafton Police Department said officers were called around 3:58 p.m. Monday, June 29, to the area of Kohlwey and Rose after a neighbor reported a gunshot at a residence on Kohlwey Drive, according to FOX6 Milwaukee.
Police said the neighbor reported that a female resident said her husband had discharged a firearm inside the home. Officers responded and safely evacuated the woman.
When gunfire, a weapon report, or a call for help comes from inside a home, neighbors should stay clear of the property, call 911, provide the exact address or closest cross streets, and let officers handle contact with anyone inside.
Police Say the Firearm Was Discharged From a Bedroom Window
Investigators later determined the woman had been involved in a domestic abuse incident with the suspect, police said.
Authorities said the suspect discharged a firearm out of a bedroom window. No injuries were reported.
Officers Set Up a Perimeter
Police established a perimeter and directed the man to leave the home.
He surrendered without incident and was taken into custody, according to the department.
The man remained in the Ozaukee County Jail pending formal charges. Police said possible charges include recklessly endangering safety, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia with domestic violence enhancers.
Neighbors Should Call, Not Confront
Residents who hear a gunshot, see someone with a weapon, or receive a request for help from inside another home should call 911 from a safe location and avoid approaching doors, windows, yards, or driveways connected to the scene.
Dispatchers need clear details, including the address, where the sound came from, whether anyone left the home, whether a weapon was seen, and where neighbors or bystanders are located.
