It seems like every day there’s a new story making headlines about a homeowners association (HOA) making wild demands of the people who live in the community. From people getting fined thousands of dollars to those who say they’ve lost their homes after the HOA forwarded mail to the wrong address, many people associate the term “HOA” with “bad news.”
And you’d think that the same could be said of one homeowner who recently posted a video on his Instagram account, claiming that he received a letter from his HOA about his bushes. But @imnotspikelee actually had a really surprising reaction to the letter, prompting his followers to share their own HOA stories.
Some of these tales are so surprising, they may change the way some folks feel about the idea of these types of associations or reinforce the way they already feel.

This Homeowner Received a Warning About His Overgrown Bushes

The video starts out with a close-up of the bushes growing in the homeowner’s front lawn, with “the HOA sent us a warning about our bushes,” written out across the video alongside a sweating emoji. As the video continued, the homeowner showcased the garden, showing how the bushes had become a little overgrown.
But instead of getting upset about the fact that he now had to cut the shrubs back presumably to avoid a fine, the caption in the video was actually quite positive.
“I don’t have a rant in me,” the homeowner continued. “What I’ve got is embarrassment that two grown people had to be told to cut their own bushes.”
So instead of ranting about having to do some extra yard work, the Instagrammer shared his hack for getting chores like this done faster—it involves hand-cutting the bushes back so you can toss the branches directly into the bin instead of having to rake and haul away debris—and that was it.
People Sounded Off in the Comments
There were a few comments from people celebrating the positive response, including one person who wrote, “Wow, I love your mentality and approach to this very refreshing good s–t, boss.” However, most people used the post as an example of why they would not enjoy living in an HOA.
“I say, H No A,” one person wrote. “I could never live somewhere, where I can get in trouble if I paint my fence white instead of HOA white. Or some BS like that.”
“I can’t do an HOA. Nope,” another person added. “I thought your bushes looked cute anyway.”
