HOA’s Request to Avoid Full-Sized Halloween Candy Bars Has Redditors Fuming
When Halloween rolls around, many children start daydreaming about the massive haul of candy they will bring home after trick-or-treating. For some kids, this process also involves strategic planning about where to trick-or-treat so that they can get the best bang for their buck while walking door to door.
That usually means heading to the neighborhood where the residents are known to give out full-sized candy bars. This holy grail of trick-or-treating is a huge win for kids, but can obviously be a big expense for the people purchasing the candy.
In one community, that expense has gotten so high that they are apparently asking people not to hand out full-sized candy bars this Halloween. A Reddit user by the name of u/BYNX0 shared a letter someone had received about the request online.
The post blew up, with several people sharing how they would’ve reacted if they had received a similar letter from their community. It would appear that most people would still give out whatever type of candy they wanted to, no matter what the rules said.

The OP didn’t say where they originally found the letter, but they were eager to share the document, especially the highlighted part that explained the suggestion.
“This year, the association is encouraging all residents to hand out fun-size candy bars only,” it said. “We are asking that full-size candy bars not be distributed.”
According to the explanation, this was because it would not only keep the experience “consistent” throughout the community, but it would also avoid making some families feel pressured to spend more money on candy so that they could keep up with their neighbors.
Thousands of People Chimed in on the Topic
Redditors had a lot of thoughts about the letter. One person said that they would feel compelled to do the opposite if this suggestion arrived in their mailbox. “I pass out fun-size candy every year. But if I got this letter, we’d be down at Costco buying boxes of full-size candy bars, and everyone would get two,” they wrote.
Another said that this may be a type of classism, writing, “The real reason is when you get a reputation for being generous, people from other neighborhoods come to trick-or-treat. We wouldn’t want the poors in our HOA neighborhood.”
There Are Some Compelling Reasons to Embrace Full-Sized Candy Bars
In 2022, someone wrote an OpEd for the Washington Post, celebrating the idea of full-sized candy bars at Halloween. There were several reasons why they said this was the superior-sized candy to hand out, and their reasons ranged from it being easier to manage to the fact that it was a lot harder to justify sampling some of the Halloween candy ahead of time when it was full-sized.
While those are compelling reasons, it seems like the decision about the type of candy people hand out at Halloween should be left to those purchasing the candy.
