Hilarious Complaint About Grocery Bag Storage Goes Viral

While plastic shopping bags aren’t as common as they once were due to the desire to move away from single-use plastics, there are still plenty of people who opt for plastic grocery bags whenever they go shopping. Whether it’s because you’ve realized you left your reusable totes in the car once you get to the checkout line, or because you prefer having the disposable bags, there are still a great many of us who bring these bags home.

And once they get home, a lot of people choose to hold onto these bags so they can be reused for things like packing their lunch, lining their trash can, and the like.

The way these bags are stored just became a major point of contention with the people of Threads after user @imightbefunny1 posted a hilarious observation about the way we collectively keep these bags in our home. “Apparently people are folding their grocery bags into tiny perfect triangles now,” they wrote. “I thought we all agreed the proper storage method was to nominate the strongest grocery bag and stuff 63 other bags inside it, like our mothers and grandmothers before us.”

The post quickly blew up, receiving more than 15,000 likes and hundreds of comments in the hours after it was posted. That’s because the idea really resonated with people, especially those who have strong feelings about what happens to those bags after they’re emptied. Here’s what they had to say.

If you haven’t seen it yet, folding grocery bags into little triangles to keep them neat and easily accessible is a big thing on social media right now. The aesthetically pleasing way of storing the bags may be appealing to some thanks to its tidy nature and relaxing process, but the post drew heavy criticism from @imightbefunny1’s followers.

“I can barely stay on top of folding my laundry; I’m not folding my grocery bags. Are you kidding me,” one person wrote.

Meanwhile, several people chimed in to share how they prefer to store their bags inside of another grocery bag, citing it as the most historically accurate process. “The bag bag. It’s a rite of passage,” another person added. “You aren’t considered an adult until you have one.”

It may seem like there are only so many ways you can store your old grocery bags, but according to the commenters on the post, there are actually dozens of different options if you want to get creative with the process.

“Cleaning out my mother’s house after she passed… She would flatten out plastic grocery bags, stack 25 of them, then roll them and rubber band them,” one person wrote, adding that they found several drawers full of these collections, which amounted to thousands of bags.  

“Not triangles, but I’ll stretch them flat-ish and quickly fold long length in half and half again, press the air out, then fold/roll to something small,” another person shared. “Those go in the BOB (Bag Of Bags).”

Not Everyone Has Access to Plastic Bags

Of course, if you live in one of the 12 states where Earth911 says plastic grocery bags are banned, you may find this thread pretty useless. However, those living outside of places like California, Delaware, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Vermont may find the discussion very funny… and perhaps even a little bit useful when it comes to how you can keep your bags at home.
