Celebrate Safely This Fourth of July: What Homeowners Need to Know About Fireworks and Insurance Coverage

Happy 4th of July!!

With Independence Day here, many Americans are firing up the barbecues, having family gatherings, and enjoying fireworks displays. But as wildfire smoke affects parts of the U.S.  (primarily the Northwest regions) and fireworks-related accidents remain common, experts are urging homeowners to celebrate safely and understand what their homeowners’ insurance actually covers.

A mix of safety awareness and coverage know-how will keep you safe from fires this weekend.

Fireworks and Fire Risks: A Volatile Combination

Each year, fireworks cause thousands of fires across the country. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2024, there were 11 fireworks-related deaths and an estimated 14,700 emergency room‑treated injuries. Nearly 1,700 of those injuries involved sparklers alone, primarily affecting hands, fingers, and faces

Fireworks may be synonymous with celebration, but they also pose real risks. Understanding your insurance coverage and following safe practices can make the difference between a joyous holiday and a devastating accident.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Fireworks Damage?

In many cases, yes — but with important limitations. Most homeowners’ insurance policies cover accidental fire damage to your home or other structures caused by fireworks. If your fireworks accidentally damage a neighbor’s house or vehicle, liability coverage often applies.

However, a crucial exception exists: damage caused by illegal fireworks is not covered. If the fireworks used are banned under state or local law, your insurance provider may deny your claim.

“Home insurance companies can and will deny claims if damage stems from illegal fireworks,” warns Leslie Kasperowicz, managing editor at Insurance.com. “This means using banned fireworks is not only dangerous but also jeopardizes your financial protection.”

Legal vs. Illegal Fireworks: Know Before You Light

Fireworks laws differ widely by state and locality. For example, Massachusetts bans all consumer fireworks, while Florida and Texas permit certain types. It’s essential to check your local laws before purchasing or using any fireworks.

Generally, legal fireworks include sparklers, fountains, and other ground-based effects, while illegal fireworks may include firecrackers, aerial shells, and rockets, depending on local regulations.

Firework Safety Tips to Protect Your Home and Community

To minimize the risk of injury and fire, follow these fireworks safety guidelines:

  • Use only legal fireworks purchased from licensed vendors.
  • Light fireworks in a clear, open area away from homes, dry grass, or flammable materials.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby to douse used fireworks or extinguish flare-ups.
  • Never relight a dud firework — wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water.
  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  • Avoid alcohol use while handling fireworks.

Wildfire Concerns Heighten the Stakes

This year’s celebrations come amid increasing concerns over wildfires (as is common this time of year). The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reports a rising trend in wildfire frequency and severity due to drought, climate change, and human activity, including fireworks.

In response, some communities may implement temporary fireworks bans or fire restrictions. Homeowners should always check local advisories before setting off fireworks, especially in high-risk areas.

Have Fun But Be Safe

Fireworks are a time-honored part of Fourth of July festivities, but they come with serious responsibilities. To protect your home and loved ones, make sure you’re using legal fireworks, practicing fire safety, and understanding what your insurance policy will — and won’t — cover.
