A Homeowner Checked on a Parked Driver Outside His House. Police Say It Nearly Turned Into a Knife Attack

A Long Island homeowner went outside after noticing a car parked near his house for an extended period.

Police said the simple check nearly turned into a stabbing.

The incident happened at about 7:10 p.m. Friday, June 19, in Woodbury, New York, after a black 2024 Honda Civic had been parked outside the home long enough to draw the homeowner’s attention, according to police details reported by LongIsland.com.

Police identified the driver as Bryan Calderon, 22, of Deer Park. The 51-year-old homeowner approached the vehicle to check on the driver’s well-being, according to News 12 Long Island.

Police Said the Driver Went to the Trunk

Police said the homeowner and Calderon got into a verbal dispute after the homeowner approached the vehicle.

The confrontation then escalated, according to police. Calderon allegedly got out of the Honda, went to the trunk, took out a long silver knife, grabbed the homeowner, and attempted to stab him.

The homeowner feared for his life and shoved Calderon to the ground, causing him to drop the knife, police said.

The Homeowner Called 911 After the Driver Left

After the struggle, Calderon allegedly fled in the Honda. Police said the homeowner immediately called 911.

Detectives later located Calderon after what police described as an extensive investigation. He was arrested without incident on Saturday, June 20, according to reports citing Nassau County police.

The case began with a parked car outside a residence and a homeowner trying to decide whether the driver needed help.

Charges Remain Allegations

Calderon was charged with first-degree attempted assault, second-degree menacing, and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to Daily Voice.

The charges remain allegations unless proven in court. Daily Voice reported that Calderon was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday, June 21, at First District Court in Hempstead.
