Homeowner Joins HOA Board Hoping to Fix Things, Discovers It’s Even Worse on The Inside

A homeowner who reluctantly moved into a neighborhood governed by a homeowners association thought joining its board might be the best way to bring some common sense to the community. Instead, getting elected gave them a front-row seat to the very behavior they had hoped to change.

In an Oct. 7 Reddit post, the homeowner, under the username u/imnotabotareyou, described how quickly their perspective changed once they began seeing the disagreements and requests that board members handle.

They had never wanted to live under an HOA in the first place. But after losing several bids on houses, other priorities eventually outweighed that particular concern.

The school district, proximity to work, and other advantages made the development appealing enough that, according to the homeowner, “we considered it our one con against a lot of pros.” Little did they know just how much the experience would strain that outlook.

The homeowner initially believed they could make a difference by volunteering for a board position when the next election came around.

They described themselves as “laid back about it and just want fairness,” hoping to bring a more reasonable approach to the association’s decisions. When the election arrived, they ran and won.

But their new position quickly revealed another side of the HOA. The homeowner said the experience was even more frustrating from inside the organization than it had been as an ordinary resident.

They described receiving unreasonable emails and watching people interpret governing documents in ways that supported their own demands. The disputes left them wondering why neighbors couldn’t simply allow one another to live peacefully.

In fact, they shared, “I find myself stressed out because it’s just so unfathomable to me to deny people stuff or fine for stuff where it’s just not in line with the documents.” The user considered the HOA to be made up of a clique, and that residents were beholden to the clique’s “interpretation” of what the documents meant for various issues.

This Disgruntled Board Member Vows to Keep HOA Disputes in the Open

Rather than resigning, the homeowner decided to make transparency a priority. They said their role now involves challenging questionable behavior and making sure disagreements are documented in the public record.

The experience also changed how they understand why HOA boards can become so contentious. They had expected to encounter some frustrating rules and personalities, but hadn’t anticipated how difficult it could be to address those problems from within.

“Some people really DO get a sick power trip out of it or something,” they wrote in their post. “It’s crazy!”

For u/imnotabotareyou, winning a seat on the board hasn’t made the HOA any more appealing. Quite the opposite, in fact. It has, however, given them an opportunity to push for the fairness and openness they wanted when they first moved into the neighborhood.
