Woman’s Petty Revenge on HOA Goes Viral After Flag Dispute
Anyone who has ever lived in a homeowners association (HOA) knows that there can be a lot of rules to follow. And while some of them sound pretty reasonable and like they would be good for keeping the neighborhood looking its best, others may feel a little like overreach.
For example, one woman on TikTok says that her mother recently got into it with her HOA over a garden flag. The whole issue started out innocently enough, according to TikToker @anneesingerr, who said that her mother requested permission to fly a special flag during the World Cup. That’s because the mom said she needed to get approval since the HOA only allows residents to fly the American flag or South Carolina’s state flag.
While the HOA president had given the woman approval to fly Spain’s flag for the afternoon while the game was on, several complaints were quickly filed. The HOA didn’t admit who had filed the complaints, but the TikToker said it was easy enough for her mom to figure out, so she decided to do something “petty” as revenge.
The situation quickly escalated, and the TikToker’s mother eventually received an email from the company that runs the association. But it sounds like the mom is having the last laugh, since she found a clever way to get around the community’s no-flag rules, and she’s used her workaround to share a very pointed message with anyone who happens to pass by her home.
A Homeowner Wanted to Fly an Unapproved Flag for an Afternoon

According to the TikToker, her mother asked for special permission to fly a flag in honor of the TikToker and her husband’s visit, which was taking place during the World Cup. Since her husband is from Spain, the TikToker’s mother thought it would be a nice nod to his heritage to show support for his team.
But about an hour after she received permission to hang the flag, the woman said that her mother started receiving formal complaints about it. Eventually, she decided to take it down and replace it with a new flag.
The new flag looked like the American flag, but instead of having stars, it said, “Abide no hate.”
The Mom Also Ordered a Sassy New Garden Flag
In addition to the new American flag, the TikToker says her mom purchased a garden flag that said, “Defund the HOA.” This went over even worse than the Spanish flag did, and the TikToker said her mom started getting a ton of complaints, including an email from the person who worked for the company that manages the community’s HOA.
Eventually, she decided to remove her garden flag and put it in the backyard where it was permitted. But that’s not all she did, since she also ordered pillows for her front porch swing that also said, “Defund the HOA.”
The TikToker could barely hold back her laughter as she described the situation, which she says is still ongoing. “I’ll let you know how this continues,” the TikToker said as she ended the video.
People Were on the Mom’s Side
Commenters were largely supportive of the mom and really loved the way she cleverly stuck it to the association. “Your mother’s level of pettiness makes me want to be friends with her,” one person wrote.
“My mom’s HOA says they’re not allowed to have pink flamingos,” another person wrote. “She got flamingos in every other color.”
A third person suggested another way for the mom to continue her fight, writing, “Hear me out, ‘Defund the HOA’ as a big decal on her car.”
Whether the mom’s fight ends here or continues remains to be seen. But for now, it seems like she’s garnered a lot of support from commenters on her daughter’s post, as well as some good ideas for other things she can do to get back at the association.
