Woman Regrets Kitchen Cabinet Makeover After DIY Project Takes a Wrong Turn

A homeowner is going viral on Threads after admitting that she hates a recent home repair in an Oct. 12 post. Threads user @breninreallife shared a photo of a controversial upgrade, telling her followers how she decided to paint her kitchen cabinets because she was “bored.”

Now, she says she regrets her decision, and she shared a before-and-after photo of the makeover to explain why. The post quickly went viral, and just hours after she shared the images, she had received more than 500 likes and hundreds of comments.

While people were mostly helpful and offered suggestions about how she could make the paint job look a little better, there were others who trashed the cabinet color itself, calling it “sad.”

Fortunately, it sounds like she has a new plan to make the cabinets look better, even though it may mean making several other adjustments around the kitchen in the process, potentially turning her brief moment of boredom into an expensive and time-consuming renovation.

It sounds like the project wasn’t one that the homeowner had particularly planned on taking on, but instead a renovation that she jumped into out of frustration over how her kitchen looked. But when the cabinets didn’t turn out how she expected them to, @breninreallife told her followers that she tried to make some other changes to fix up the space.

She posted a photo of a black sink, writing, “I thought it was the sink, so I put one in too. I think I keep making it worse.”

However, people were really supportive in the comments and offered suggestions for how she could improve the kitchen.

It’s All About Picking the Right Colors

A lot of people told the woman that her color choice was to blame. “Artist here, if you paint them a warm color, they will flow better with the warm undertones in the countertops and grout,” one person wrote. “Also, I would look into a matte finish.”

Others suggested some different color suggestions, like navy, green, and plum. 

“Pick a happier color. Flipper’s grey is sad,” another person added.

Redoing Kitchen Cabinets Can Be Expensive

The homeowner may not be happy with how things turned out, but she’d probably be even more unhappy if she had paid someone else to do the project. That’s because CertaPro Painters says that painting kitchen cabinets can get pretty pricey, with the average cost adding up to around $125 to $185 per piece. That includes the doors, drawers, and cabinet boxes, but not the interior of the cabinets. 

There are also some other factors that can go into the pricing, including the condition of the cabinets and the type of finish you opt to get. Given the size of the poster’s kitchen, that could’ve easily been a four-figure paint job if she’d hired someone else to take it on.
