Living in an apartment, a studio, or having a tiny area for a garden in your backyard might seem limiting to growing the fresh fruits you’ve always dreamed of. However, it’s not as restricting as you’d think. In fact, there are tons of fruits that you can produce without having a lavish garden space, and trust us, they would thrive despite having less room to grow.
You do not need to forgo your aspirations of growing a giant basket of fruit for your dining room table’s centerpiece or baking various pies and desserts because you think you don’t have the space to do so. A balcony or well-lit window is all you’d need for many fruit seeds to flourish.
Below, we’ve compiled five of the easiest fruits to grow in small places, making you forget about wanting a spacious garden and opting for the tinier option.
Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the most straightforward fruits to grow, especially when you have less space to work with. They primarily develop in the spring, summer, and fall, and you’d need nothing more than a well-draining container and potting soil to get the job done.
They can also be grown in a variety of ways, such as planters, towers, stacked pots, and pyramids, though the latter might need more room than a balcony or small patio would provide.
Thankfully, strawberries stay compact, making them ideal fruits to grow when you have a smaller area for gardening at your disposal.
Plums

Plums are another great fruit when trying to condense your garden into a limited space. Experts at Almanac.com recommend that you choose a dwarf plum to plant, and then you can train it to grow along a wall or fence (which also looks exceptionally beautiful).
This would also require some maintenance in pruning to ensure they hold the shape and size you want, but you’ll be surprised at how much they prosper with the right level of care.
The ideal time to plant plums is early spring. They’re ready to dig into when they feel soft and easily come off the branch.
Tomatoes

Just like plums, tomatoes are also better to seek out in dwarf size when dealing with a small space. All that’s needed for these babies to grow is a large pot with good drainage and ample sunlight.
When considering space, a good option is to use hanging planters or a trellis to support the plants and encourage them to grow vertically.
Depending on the climate where you live, tomatoes are typically best grown in the spring or early summer when the soil is warm.
Blueberries

Blueberries are a safe bet for a simple fruit to grow in a less-than-extravagant space, just as long as you plant them in the largest pot possible. A minimum 18-inch-deep container with ample drainage is preferred to ensure they last a long time.
Planting in the fall or spring and in a sunny location is also recommended to ensure a plentiful supply of blueberries.
Low-growing or dwarf blueberries are also an option to manage space.
Lemons

While you might have envisioned a giant lemon tree in your yard one day, you can still grow lemons without the backyard space to do so.
For instance, you can get a dwarf lemon tree planted in a pot with well-draining soil and ensure it gets at least eight hours a day of sunlight to obtain a miniature version of the lemon tree of your dreams.
Avoid overwatering, and remember to bring the lemon indoors when it starts to get cold. Otherwise, you can enjoy fresh lemons when they are firm, yellowish in color, and about two to three inches in size.
The bottom line is that it’s not impossible to harvest an array of delicious fruits if you don’t have a ton of space. So much can be done with a smaller area, and they’ll taste that much better knowing that you produced them yourself.
