Catch the Stunning Snow Moon Before It’s Gone

Catch the Stunning Snow Moon Before It’s Gone

Don’t miss your chance to witness February’s full Snow Moon as it lights up the night sky this week. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Snow Moon will peak at 8:53 AM EST on Wednesday, February 12. Even if you miss the peak, the Snow Moon will be visible from February 11 through 14, with the best views likely on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

How to Get the Best Viewing Experience

Check the Almanac’s Moon Phases and Lunar Calendar by entering your zip code to find the moon phase, date, and best viewing time for your location. Visibility depends on weather conditions, but for the best experience, head away from city lights to a dark, open area.

Using binoculars or a telescope allows you to see the moon’s craters and surface details up close. Make sure to bundle up and bring a blanket to stay cozy while you watch.

Why Is It Called a Snow Moon?

Native American tribes tracked time using moon phases, a practice later adopted by colonial settlers. They referred to the full moon of February as the “Snow Moon.” Since February has some of the heaviest snowfalls of the year, it made hunting difficult, which is why it was also known as the “Hunger Moon.” The name of the moon can vary by region and culture. Some other names it is known for are Ice Moon, Storm Moon, and Bear Moon.

Each full moon’s name reflects seasonal changes and traditional activities of the time. The Snow Moon symbolizes the challenges the harsh winter weather has on life and survival.

While the Snow Moon carries deep cultural significance, its beauty alone is reason enough to step outside and admire its glow.
