Smithsonian’s National Zoo is Bringing Back Its Holiday Lights, Including a Special Adults-Only Night

ZooLights is returning to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., on November 20, 2026. The zoo announced on October 8 that the holiday event will run on select nights through January 3, 2027.

This year’s display will include a million LED lights and more than 100 glowing lanterns. The lanterns feature animals and habitats from oceans, deserts, grasslands, rainforests, and polar regions.

ZooLights is now in its 18th year, and regular admission costs $10 per person. There’s also a special Adults-Only Night planned for December 16, with a few things that aren’t available during regular ZooLights visits.

On most nights, the zoo’s indoor animal exhibits will be closed so the animals can rest. Visitors attending the adults-only event will be able to go inside select animal houses after hours.

The December 16 event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is open to guests 21 and older. Tickets cost $19 per person and include a complimentary adult beverage.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo said there will also be seasonal treats, games and festive music.

The zoo offered a similar adults-only Date Night last December, which also included after-hours access to animal exhibits.

What Else Is Planned for ZooLights?

Visitors can expect live performances from local community groups on Fridays in December. Saturdays will feature roaming carolers singing holiday songs from past decades, while Sundays will have holiday trivia.

There are also a few activities that cost extra. A winter-themed maze, the National Zoo Choo Choo train and the Conservation Carousel each cost $6 per person. The carousel operates weather permitting and closes when temperatures drop below 35 degrees.

Food options include Bootheel BBQ and s’mores kits from Dolci Gelati that visitors can roast at firepits outside the Elephant Community Center. Adults can also purchase cocktails such as mulled wine and a Night Owl Espresso Martini at Vintage Views.

How Much Are Tickets for ZooLights?

General admission is $10 for visitors ages 3 and older, while children 2 and younger get in free. Tickets are already available through the zoo’s website.

ZooLights runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on scheduled Monday through Saturday evenings and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. The last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

Parking costs $30 per vehicle when purchased in advance or $40 on the day of the event, subject to availability.

Zoo members also have two special nights on December 8 and 9. Members can reserve up to six free tickets for those evenings, which include after-hours access to select animal houses.
