Make These Clean and Simple Dishwasher Tablets at Home

Make These Clean and Simple Dishwasher Tablets at Home

There’s something unsettling about plates that come out of the dishwasher smelling lemony and faintly like a science experiment. Those shiny pods that promise sparkle often leave behind more than just a squeaky-clean finish. Where do they go when they “magically dissolve?” Those things have been found to leave behind microplastics and a trail of chemical sludge that sticks to your plates like gum under a school desk.

But @SustainableJungle shows us there’s a low-fuss, healthier alternative sitting quietly in your pantry. A few everyday ingredients can team up to create plastic-free dishwasher tablets that are not only effective but also safe for your family, your wallet, and the environment.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup kosher salt
  • Lemon juice or white vinegar – whichever you have on hand, just enough to turn the mix into a moldable paste.

Baking soda deodorizes and breaks down grease. Washing soda gives stubborn food stains the boot. Kosher salt helps soften hard water, reducing the cloudy film left on glassware. And the acidic kick from lemon juice or vinegar binds the mixture while giving it some natural disinfecting power.

What to Do:

Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the lemon juice or vinegar slowly, stirring as you go. The goal is a damp, sandy texture—something you could build a sturdy sandcastle with.

Scoop and press the paste into a silicone ice cube tray (one with smaller slats), smoothing it down like you’re tucking it in for a long nap. Then, leave it alone for at least 12 hours to dry out and harden.

Humidity can slow the drying process, so if you live somewhere especially damp, give them a bit more time. Once they’re solid, pop them out and store them in a glass jar with a tight lid. Keep the jar somewhere dry—under the sink works perfectly, as long as it’s away from moisture.

Pop one tablet into your machine’s detergent compartment, shut the door, and your dishes will be well on their way to sparkle town, minus the plastic film and chemical after-party. These tablets work well for everyday loads and can be paired with white vinegar in the rinse compartment if you need an extra boost of shine.

Why Should You Bother?

Making dishwasher tablets at home takes a little more time than grabbing a box off the supermarket shelf. But that extra effort pays off in spades. Store-bought pods are not only expensive over time, but they also come wrapped in plastic coatings that can release microplastics and harmful chemicals into the water—and onto your dishes.

That’s not the kind of seasoning anyone wants. Homemade tablets keep things simple. They cost far less, use ingredients you can actually pronounce, and clean just as effectively without leaving behind a trail of synthetic slow-poison. Once you get into the rhythm, making your home just a little healthier, a little thriftier, and a whole lot more intentional becomes second nature.
