Homeowner and 2 Dogs Safely Rescued from Early Morning House Blaze During Fire Prevention Week

A homeowner and two dogs were able to get to safety after waking up to a fire the morning of Oct. 5. The Charlotte Fire Department, which is located in Carmel Township, Michigan, shared photos from the scary moments on its Facebook page.

According to the post, the homeowner woke up to his smoke-filled house and quickly evacuated. However, he didn’t grab his phone in his hurry to get out the door. By the time he realized his mistake, the blaze had already grown too big for him to get back inside.

He was eventually able to get in touch with authorities so that they could come put out the fire. According to the post, an issue with the home’s wiring could be to blame.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported as part of the incident, and firefighters used the timing of the fire to talk about Fire Prevention Week, explaining how followers can stay safe at home.

Firefighters Were Alerted to the Fire By Police

According to the Charlotte Fire Department, the homeowner tried to wake up his neighbors by knocking on the doors. He ended up driving to the fire station, which is where Charlotte police officers made contact around 3:25 a.m.

“Our first truck arrived on scene at 3:30 to find heavy smoke coming from the residence,” according to the post. “Due to the obvious involvement of the basement and both the first and second floors, a second alarm was requested, bringing additional resources to the scene.”

The Charlotte Fire Department then started knocking down the fire, allowing them to cancel some of the additional fire companies that were called to help, including Olivet Fire Department and Bellevue Fire Department, both of which got a shout-out from the Charlotte Fire Department in the Facebook post alongside other organizations like the police, 911 dispatch, and Eaton Area EMS.

Fire Prevention Week Has Begun

Charlotte Fire Department used the situation to issue a reminder to residents. “This incident comes as we begin Fire Prevention Week, making it a timely reminder of the importance of having working smoke alarms, knowing two ways out of every room, and having a family escape plan,” the post said. “Most importantly, if you wake up to smoke or fire in your home, get out and stay out. Do not go back inside for phones, pets, or belongings. Once you are safely outside, call 911 and let firefighters handle the rest.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 4-10. Firefighters use the time to share reminders about fire safety, sometimes even dropping into school to share worksheets and carry out demonstrations for students so they can also learn how to stay safe at home.
