HOA Goes Viral After Banning Walking at Night
The news has been full of horror stories about homeowners associations (HOAs) lately. From people who lost their homes over outstanding dues to those who have been fined tens of thousands of dollars by their association, there’s no shortage of stories out there.
One homeowner’s HOA tale is going viral on TikTok after he shared how his HOA had just sent an email to residents about a new prohibited activity. However, TikToker @thelawnglowup says that the change doesn’t have anything to do with people’s homes, but with a pastime that many in the neighborhood enjoy: an evening stroll.
Now, he says that his family is fighting back against the absurd rule, and he thinks others in his neighborhood will as well. And his story is gaining a lot of attention from people who are upset about the change, as well as those who claim the HOA doesn’t even have the power to enforce it.
After less than a week, it has received more than 14,000 likes and over 1,500 comments from people who want an update on how the fight is going.

According to the original Sept. 18, 2026, post, the TikToker’s HOA sent out an email to all of the residents in the community that said, “walking in the evening time is now prohibited.” That’s especially troubling for the TikToker, who says that his wife has been exclusively walking at night since it’s been so hot during the day.
“Just when you think it can’t get no dumber, they go and pull something like this out,” he said. But according to him, his wife doesn’t plan to take the new arrangement lying down, and she was already heading out for a walk with their son as the TikToker filmed his video. “I’m just sitting outside right now to see how many people go walking in the neighborhood,” he said, adding that there are a lot of “petty” people here who would love a chance to break this rule in particular.
People Say HOAs Can’t Enforce a Walking Ban
The comments quickly filled up with people who were mad about the new rule. “Marching band after dark,” one person joked.
“Time to create a neighborhood walking group that meets after dinner,” another added.
However, one person chimed in to tell the TikToker that it was unlikely that the ban could stand up to any pushback. “The HOA cannot create new rules that aren’t in the original covenants. And yes, I do know,” they wrote.
According to the HOA Leader website, HOA boards shouldn’t have much say when it comes to whether residents are allowed to walk in common areas. A post from Best Lawyers said something similar, saying that HOAs can’t even set curfews. While they can enforce quiet times and noise levels, enforcing curfews or personal conduct rules surrounding a person’s own property could be seen as a violation of personal freedoms.
Hopefully the original TikToker shares an update about the walking ban soon so that people can find out what ended up happening. Based on what he said, it sounds like he may be able to get a crowd of unhappy neighbors to turn up at the next HOA board meeting so they can push back against the new rule.
