A routine flight turned into a medical scare. Four Frontier Airlines flight attendants experienced headaches and nausea during a flight to Florida, prompting the pilots to request medical help before the plane reached its destination.
According to PEOPLE, Frontier Flight 1046 departed Cleveland Hopkins International Airport shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, bound for Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As the plane approached Fort Lauderdale, the pilots reportedly alerted air traffic control that a medical situation was developing among the cabin crew.
FOX Business reports that emergency medical personnel were asked to meet the aircraft when it arrived at its gate. According to PEOPLE, the Airbus A321 landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at around 10:15 a.m., after approximately two-and-a-half hours in the air.
The flight landed safely, but the incident did not end when the plane reached Florida. A social media post by CBS News reports that two crew members were taken to a hospital. PEOPLE writes that the cause of the flight attendants’ symptoms remained unclear.

PEOPLE reported on an air traffic control recording obtained by ATC.com. In the recording, the pilots described the developing situation and asked that medical assistance be sent to Gate A4 to meet the plane when it landed.
The pilot went on to share that the flight attendants were experiencing headaches.
As the conversation continued, the pilot reported that the number of attendants experiencing nausea had increased from three to four.
The Cause Of The Crew Members’ Illnesses Remains Unknown
Frontier had not publicly identified what caused four flight attendants to develop similar symptoms. PEOPLE reported that the airline, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office had been contacted for additional information.
The incident also disrupted Frontier’s schedule. According to PEOPLE, the aircraft was scheduled to return from Fort Lauderdale to Cleveland at around 11:30 a.m., but that flight was canceled.
Miami New Times notes that headaches and nausea can occur during so-called “odor” or “fume events,” when contaminants enter an aircraft’s cabin air. However, no official source has confirmed that fumes or a cabin-air problem caused the Frontier crew members’ symptoms.
The Frontier incident comes only weeks after another flight experienced multiple sick crew members, although the circumstances were different. PEOPLE reports that six flight attendants aboard an American Airlines flight from Rome to Philadelphia became ill on July 25 after an odor associated with an onboard oven, causing that aircraft to divert to Dublin.
