Disney World’s Iconic Spaceship Earth Is Leaking, and Guests Are Being Sent to Another Entrance

KGuests who were trying to get on Spaceship Earth at EPCOT on October 15 found the main entrance blocked off. Disney employees were sending everyone around to the side of the giant silver ball because of a reported water leak.

WDW News Today visited the attraction and photographed the usual entrance closed off with stanchions. A Cast Member was posted outside, directing people to the right side of Spaceship Earth.

The ride itself was still open. Guests with Lightning Lane reservations and those using the regular standby line just had to enter from the west side instead.

Disney normally uses that area when the line gets too long. On Thursday, it was the entrance for everyone, with one line for standby and another for Lightning Lane.

At the alternate entrance, Cast Members were standing underneath an umbrella as people arrived. The line eventually brought everyone back to the front of Spaceship Earth, where they could board the ride.

WDWNT asked about the change and was told by Cast Members that the building was “leaking.” Disney hasn’t explained where the water is coming from or how long the entrance will be closed.

Spaceship Earth Also Had Leaks in 2018 and 2020

Back on September 2, 2018, WDWNT reported that water was coming out from underneath the sphere and flooding the outdoor queue.

The Reedy Creek Fire Department was spotted at the attraction that morning, and the ride was closed for several hours. It reopened that evening around 7:15 p.m., with a reported wait of about 30 minutes.

Then, in August 2020, the same outlet photographed water dripping from the panels above the entrance. The water was coming down right in front of the wait-time signs, leaving the ground wet where guests lined up.

WDWNT said the drainage system inside Spaceship Earth was damaged and that water continued dripping days after it rained, but it is not clear whether that same problem is causing the latest leak.

Spaceship Earth Closed for Repairs in 2025

Spaceship Earth was closed for maintenance last year, starting on August 25. It reopened on October 18, a week earlier than Disney had originally scheduled. Some of the work included repainting and replacing exterior panels near the bottom of the building, along with updates inside the ride.

Spaceship Earth has been part of EPCOT since the park opened in 1982. The 16-minute ride takes visitors through the history of communication, including cave paintings, Gutenberg’s printing press and the 1969 moon landing, with Judi Dench narrating.

Disney hasn’t announced another refurbishment or ride closure connected to the latest leak.
