Crossing Guard Rushes To Protect Children as Car Moves Through Crosswalk

A Utah crossing guard sprang into action when a car began moving toward two children who were still making their way through a crosswalk.

Tara Sandstrom was helping two children cross a street in Lehi, Utah, on Sept. 16 when a stopped vehicle began moving toward them. Footage captured by Sandstrom shows her standing in the roadway with her stop sign raised as two children on scooters enter the crosswalk.

A horn can then be heard before a white vehicle that had been stopped at the intersection begins moving forward. Sandstrom immediately rushed toward the vehicle, putting herself between the car and the children while signaling and yelling for the driver to stop.

Thankfully, the Vehicle Stopped

The vehicle stopped, allowing the children to continue safely across the street.

“My instinct was simply to protect the kids and make sure everyone stayed safe,” Sandstrom told Storyful. “There were children still in the crosswalk.”

Sandstrom said she felt immediate fear when she realized the vehicle was moving toward the children.

“I felt immediate fear and concern because there were children still in the crosswalk and a vehicle was moving toward them,” she said.

A Reminder for Drivers

In a caption accompanying the video, Sandstrom explained that crossing guards have to remain constantly aware of what is happening around them.

“As a crossing guard, my head is constantly on a swivel,” she wrote, explaining that she watches the crosswalk, nearby vehicles and traffic approaching from both directions.

She also reminded motorists that stopping for a crosswalk means staying stopped until pedestrians have completely cleared it. Drivers should not assume that because they have already stopped, they can begin slowly moving forward while children are still crossing.

Getting Children Safely Across

Sandstrom acknowledged that most drivers aren’t deliberately trying to create dangerous situations, but said it only takes one distracted or impatient motorist for an ordinary school morning to become frightening.

“This isn’t about being difficult or holding up traffic. It’s about giving kids the safest possible crossing,” she wrote.

Her message is a simple one: when children are crossing, a few extra seconds can make all the difference. Drivers should stay alert, remain stopped and wait for the crossing guard to signal that it is safe to proceed.
