Homeowner finds possum in house.

Couple Finds Out Their Cats Have Been Hosting a Wild Houseguest

Picture this: Your normally well-behaved cats have started acting out around the house. They’re getting onto the table at night while you’re asleep and eating the food you have sitting in a dish. They’re also suddenly no longer using their litter box, instead opting to go to the bathroom wherever they please.

That’s a situation one couple thought they were dealing with recently until they discovered that a possum was actually to blame. Threads user dell.ightfull posted her story on Oct. 22, telling her followers about the unusual circumstances.

“Funniest thing happened last night,” she began the story. “My husband had been saying our cat, Polly, had been eating pears and apples from the table, which is a possibility.” When her husband got up in the middle of the night to catch the cats in the act, he found a possum on the table instead.

Believe it or not, that’s not even the wildest part of the story. According to the Threads user, her cats had befriended the possum, which now appears to be living on their patio.

According to the post, the husband found the possum at 2:30 a.m. when he heard a noise in the kitchen. He went to shoo the cats away, which is when he found the wild animal.

“So at 2:30 a.m. we were trying to get a possum outside,” the post continued. “And the cats were friends with it. Probably been living in here for a while. I thought my senior cat had been having incontinence issues.”

In a follow-up post about the incident, the woman added that she had put some food out for the possum since he had likely gotten used to having a consistent food source while living in their home.

“I do love possums, and my cats apparently do too,” she continued. “One came sauntering over and started grooming her. And the funniest part was my husband woke me up by asking, “How long have we had this animal?” Just assuming I had actually moved a possum in.”

She Shared Photos of the Cats and the Possum

The woman’s followers got a chance to see the cats in question as well as the possum, which was posing for a picture on the deck the following day.

People were quick to share their thoughts about the situation, including those who were also huge possum fans. “Me suddenly wondering how hard it is to litter box train a possum,” one person wrote.

Another person flipped the story around, joking, “Oh thanks. My cat read this and is now claiming it’s a rogue possum pooping in the hallway instead of him.”

Anecdotal accounts online suggest that cats and possums commonly form unlikely friendships. A post on Reddit claimed that the OP’s cat had befriended the neighborhood possums, creating some adorable moments, and they wanted to know if that was normal.

“Cats and opossums get along well,” one person wrote.

“Yes, surprisingly,” another added. “My outdoor cat sits and watches the possums, different ones on different nights, come and eat cat food on the deck.”

While it may be common for some people to see these two creatures together, it’s clearly a bit more unusual to find a possum living in your house with your cat, making the Threads story that much funnier for everyone.
