Child Gets Head Stuck in Playground, Prompting New York Fire Department to Take Action in “Cute” Rescue
While many people are unlikely to associate the words “New York City Fire Department,” “rescue,” and “cute” with one another, that’s exactly what unfolded during a recent fall afternoon. That’s because the FDNY was called out to assist with an unusual incident after a child got their head stuck at a local playground.
A bystander captured the incident on video, posting it to her Threads account. Less than 24 hours after @sandy.ames.hypnotherapy hit “post,” the video had amassed more than 38,800 views and more than 1,500 comments.
While many of them were notes from other parents who were thankful it wasn’t their child stuck in such a crazy position, a lot of the commenters celebrated the FDNY for their quick action. Others noted that the children the young boy had been playing with at the time also stepped up in a big way to make sure he was OK.
Fortunately, the video ends on a happy note, and the boy was eventually freed. However, he may be a little more cautious about where he tries to fit his head from now on.
A Boy Got Stuck in a Fence

The clip begins with an FDNY firefighter making his way over to a small child who had his head stuck between a pair of vertical fence posts. It was unclear how long the boy had been there from the video, but it seemed like everyone was relieved to see help arrive.
Armed with some straps and what appears to be a Halligan bar, the firefighters worked together to spread the bars further apart so that the boy could release his head. At least four firefighters and what appeared to be an EMT worked together to free the boy, with one of them standing behind him to protect his head while they used the straps and the bar to loosen the fence.
A Crowd Gathered to Watch
Children and adults alike gathered around the fence to watch the firefighters work. Eventually, they were able to loosen the fence enough to pull the young boy out, which resulted in cheers and celebration from the crowd.
Once he turned around, it was clear that he was a little emotional about the incident, and several other kids ran up to give him high-fives and check on the little boy, which seemed to cheer him up slightly.
People Commended the Kids in the Comments
A lot of the responses on the viral video centered around the way the boy’s friends treated him after he was out. “All the kids were sweet at the end and checked on him,” one person wrote. “That’s a good group of kids.”
Others laughed about how the kids tried to get in on the action, frequently getting pulled away from the firefighters by nearby adults. “Kids are the most unapologetic bystanders,” another person wrote. “All these adults trying to get a kid’s head out of a fence, and every kid on the playground is like, ‘You know what this situation needs? More kids.'”
Then there were those who recognized the skill of the firefighters, who appeared to have been down this road once or twice in the past. “That man has done this before,” one person joked.
Well, it looks like this is a case of all’s well that ends well, since the little boy was freed without too much added stress or trauma. Hopefully he and all the kids he was with that day learned a valuable lesson about not putting their heads in places they don’t belong.
