California Thrift Store Turns Clothing Sales into Showers and Meals for Homeless Residents

Shoppers browsing the clothing racks at a new thrift store in Fresno, California, are helping provide something beyond affordable secondhand finds. Money earned at the shop supports showers for people experiencing homelessness, along with meals and other necessities.

The store in question, H2H Vintage Thrift, opened in May 2026, then celebrated its formal grand opening in September. Its profits support a local nonprofit’s outreach efforts, including a specially equipped RV that brings showers and clean clothing to people living on the streets.

According to an Oct. 12 report by the Fresno Bee, the business is operated by Hearts 2 Hands Ministries, a Christian nonprofit founded by Jeska Garofalo. The thrift store is intended to help keep those services running while offering the community another way to contribute.

One of the nonprofit’s most distinctive services is a mobile shower unit housed in an RV that travels around Fresno. People experiencing homelessness can use the showers and receive fresh clothing and towels.

Hearts 2 Hands also operates a van that takes people to medical appointments, church, and recovery meetings. The organization provides meals and hygiene supplies, along with sleeping bags and tents. Even bicycles get some attention, with a volunteer repairing them for residents who depend on them for transportation.

Keeping those services operating requires a steady stream of support. Brenda Barnhart, who works closely with Garofalo, emphasized the importance of such contributions for the organization’s success, telling the Fresno Bee, “We’re run purely off donations.”

The shop offers vintage and everyday secondhand clothing for men, women, and children. Prices include graphic T-shirts generally ranging from $5 to $10, while some dresses sell for $12 to $22.

Donated clothing serves two purposes: some goes directly to unhoused residents, while other pieces make their way onto the store’s racks or are sold online through platforms such as Depop.

From a Ford Flex to a Fresno Thrift Store

Long before H2H Vintage Thrift opened its doors, Garofalo was distributing food, water, and towels to people experiencing homelessness from her Ford Flex.

As her outreach expanded, she began envisioning a way to generate additional funding for the people she was helping.

“She had a dream about having a retail space where the funds from the store fund the outreach she does with the unhoused,” Barnhart told the Fresno Bee.

That vision eventually became H2H Vintage Thrift, located at 1368 N. Blackstone Avenue in a former carpet-cleaning business.

With only two paid employees, Hearts 2 Hands is also seeking volunteers to help staff the thrift store and transport residents to appointments.

H2H Vintage Thrift is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store continues to accept clothing donations, though currently it is not taking furniture.
