Boynton Beach Homeowners Can Get Permit Fees Refunded for Storm Upgrades, But the Deadline Is Coming

Boynton Beach homeowners making certain storm-hardening or energy-efficiency upgrades may be able to get their city building permit fees refunded, but the program is temporary.

The city has launched a Building Permit Fee Rebate Program that refunds 100% of city-imposed building permit fees for qualifying improvements on homesteaded residential properties, according to Boca Post.

The program is already active and covers eligible permit applications from May 1, 2026, through 5 p.m. on September 15, 2026.

That deadline gives homeowners a narrow window if they are planning work before the busiest part of hurricane season.

The rebate does not pay for the roof, windows, doors, shutters, generator, air-conditioning system, materials, or labor. It refunds the city-imposed permit fees tied to specific eligible projects.

Boynton Beach says eligible work includes roof replacement, impact-resistant window or door replacement, hurricane shutters or other hurricane protection, air-conditioning system changeouts, and generator installation.

The permit application must be limited to one or more of those covered improvement types.

If a permit includes extra work outside the eligible categories, the city says it will not qualify for the rebate.

The Rebate Is for Homesteaded Boynton Beach Homes

To qualify, homeowners must own and occupy a homesteaded residential property within Boynton Beach city limits.

The city says single-family homes, townhomes, villas, and condominium units can qualify. The property also must have received a homestead exemption as of January 1, 2026, according to Palm Beach County Property Appraiser records.

The rebate is issued directly to the property owner, not the contractor.

No Separate Rebate Application Is Required

Boynton Beach says no separate rebate application is required. The city’s Building Department and Finance Department will automatically identify eligible permits.

Boca Post reported that rebate checks are expected to be mailed to the property address on file within 60 days of permit issuance. State-mandated surcharges, including BCAIF and DBPR fees collected for the state, are not eligible for refund under the program.

The Contractor and Permit Still Matter

Boynton Beach’s Building Department tells residents to use licensed contractors and get written estimates before repair, renovation, or construction work.

The city also advises homeowners to make sure estimates describe the work, materials, permit documents, inspections, completion date, and total cost. Most jobs require permits, and the city says homeowners should check with the local building department before work begins.

Homeowners should not sign off on completed work until the job is finished and the contractor has cleared all permit requirements with final inspection approval.

Residents with questions about the rebate can contact the Boynton Beach Building Department at 561-742-6000, Option 1, email [email protected], use the city’s Building Department page, or visit City Hall at 100 E. Ocean Ave.
