Are They Even There? 12 Signs a Partner is Checking Out

It’s ideal that you and your partner are strolling hand in hand through life, but sometimes their actions give you pause, and you’re not sure if the walk has become a solo hike. What happens when your partner seems to be stepping off the relationship ride?

Spotting the signs that your partner is mentally packing their bags can be tricky, but essential. It helps steer things back on course before everything is too far gone to bounce back from.

Here are the subtle signs that your partner is emotionally or physically distancing themselves from you.

1. They No Longer Want to Spend Time With You

One of the first signs that your partner may be checking out is a noticeable decline in the time they spend with you. If your partner suddenly has a packed schedule and rarely makes time for date nights or even casual hangouts, it’s a red flag.

It can feel like they’re always busy with work, friends, or hobbies that don’t include you. This change in behavior is often a sign that they’re deliberately choosing to spend their time elsewhere.

2. They Begin Openly Criticising You

Constructive criticism is a part of any healthy relationship. However, if your partner starts frequently criticizing you in a harsh or demeaning manner, it could indicate a deeper issue.

These criticisms can range from your appearance to your habits and even your life choices, leaving you feeling belittled and unsupported. When criticism becomes a way to push you away, it erodes the foundation of mutual respect and trust.

3. They Don’t Talk About the Relationship Anymore

Unless you want your love life to be like a dead plant, you have to water your relationship with constant communication. If your partner avoids discussions about where you’re headed or shows disinterest when you bring your relationship up, it could be a sign they’re mentally checking out.

It’s worth having an honest conversation to express your concerns and see if your partner is willing to re-engage in these critical discussions.

4. They No Longer Seek Your Help or Opinion

You may think your partner is annoying when they keep asking if she should paint the kitchen green or yellow, but if they no longer care for your opinion, they’re halfway out the door. In a healthy relationship, both individuals value each other’s views and input.

If they suddenly stop asking your thoughts on a promotion at work or any big or small decisions, it can indicate they no longer see you as a significant part of their life.

5. They Ignore Your Calls and Texts

Is he leaving your text on read and returning your calls after seven business days? This may be a flashing light that indicates disengagement.

You likely feel unimportant when this happens, and frequent unresponsiveness can ultimately erode trust and intimacy in a relationship. However, be careful and try not to fix the lack of communication by leaving them 17 missed calls, because you may make them even more distant.

6. Their Priorities Have Changed

When your partner’s priorities shift dramatically, and you no longer seem to be at the top of their list, it’s a sign they may be checking out. This change can manifest in various forms, like more Friday drinks with Joe or more out-of-town work trips.

They might even dive into new hobbies, some that they know you won’t dare try. Communicate your feelings and see if there’s room to realign your priorities as a couple or if this shift indicates a larger issue.

7. Reduced or No Intimacy

Physical and emotional intimacy are like the peanut butter and jelly of love. A noticeable decrease in affection, touching, and sexual activity can signal that your partner is withdrawing.

Understanding the reasons behind this change requires open and compassionate dialogue. It may stem from stress, health issues, or deeper relationship problems. Sometimes, their affection toward you has just depleted.

8. You No Longer Have Conflicts

While constant fighting is unhealthy, the absence of conflict can also be a warning sign. If your partner seems indifferent and avoids arguments altogether, it may indicate a loss of investment in the relationship.

When handled constructively, disagreements are a sign of engagement and a desire to resolve issues. Avoiding conflicts can lead to unresolved issues piling up, eventually causing a larger rift.

9. They Exclude You From Social Media Posts

Sharing moments and milestones on social media is now accepted as a way to acknowledge your relationship publicly. If your partner starts excluding you from their posts or stops tagging you in shared experiences, it can be a sign they’re distancing themselves.

It may seem vain, but social media behavior can reflect deeper issues in the relationship.

10. Their Future Plans Don’t Seem to Include You

Has your partner’s future language changed from “we” to “I? Future planning is a natural part of a committed relationship. If your partner makes plans that don’t include you or avoids discussing future goals together, it can suggest they’re not envisioning a long-term future with you.

Discussing your future together and expressing your concerns can help clarify their intentions and determine whether they are willing to realign on future plans.

11. They’re No Longer Empathetic

Is your partner nowadays snoring away next to you, even when you’re hurting? If your partner becomes less empathetic and shows little concern for your feelings, it can indicate they’re emotionally checking out.

Addressing this change directly and expressing how it affects you can sometimes help you understand each other’s perspective and find ways to rebuild emotional intimacy.

12. They Become Rude or Disrespectful

Increased rudeness or disrespect is a significant red flag in any relationship. If your partner starts treating you poorly, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong.

Handle this behavior immediately and set boundaries to protect your emotional well-being. If they’re willing, seek professional help and get back on the same page with respect.
