A Homeowner’s Security Cameras Alerted Them as Suspects Tried To Steal a Dirt Bike and Four-Wheeler

A Homeowner’s Security Cameras Alerted Them as Suspects Tried To Steal a Dirt Bike and Four-Wheeler

A Connecticut homeowner’s security cameras helped alert police during an attempted theft of a dirt bike and four-wheeler, authorities said.

South Windsor police said the case began with a November 2022 incident on Main Street, where officers responded to an attempted burglary into a shed, according to Patch.

Police said the suspects were trying to steal a four-wheeler and a dirt bike when the homeowner was alerted by security cameras. Officers arrived and interrupted the attempted theft.

Sheds, detached garages, and backyard storage areas often hold expensive equipment that can be loaded quickly if someone gets inside. Cameras can help alert a homeowner, but the stored vehicles still need locks, records, and added protection before anything happens.

After officers interrupted the attempted theft, police said the suspects fled into nearby woods. Investigators later recovered evidence at the scene. Police said that evidence helped identify Carlos J. Rivera, 31, of Springfield, Massachusetts, and led to an arrest warrant.

The case remained open for years before Rivera turned himself in.

The Arrest Came Years After the Attempted Theft

Rivera turned himself in at South Windsor police headquarters Thursday morning, police said. He was held on a $25,000 surety bond and taken to Manchester Superior Court later that day.

Police charged Rivera with conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, possession of burglar’s tools, and conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle. The charges remain allegations unless proven in court.

Dirt Bikes and ATVs Need More Than a Closed Shed Door

The National Insurance Crime Bureau advises motorcycle owners to lock their cycles even when stored in a garage and to consider an alarm system.

The group also advises owners to avoid keeping the title in the motorcycle’s storage compartment.

Those same habits are useful for homeowners storing dirt bikes, ATVs, four-wheelers, and other high-value outdoor equipment. A locked shed, motion lighting, camera alerts, alarms, serial-number records, and current insurance documents can make theft harder and help police or insurers after an attempted break-in.
