Woman Puts Earring on Her Sleeve to Stop Seatmate From Invading Her Space
A dispute over personal space aboard a Delta Air Lines flight has turned into a much broader viral debate and controversy, all because of one earring. One passenger claimed a woman deliberately poked him with the sharp jewelry after becoming upset over a shared armrest.
The woman, however, has a different explanation. She says the earring was a last resort after repeatedly asking the man beside her to stop brushing against her arm while she tried to sleep.
The disagreement became public on Oct. 16, when a passenger identified as Otto posted about the event on X. His post included a photo of his seat neighbor with the earring in place on her sleeve. His complaint attracted widespread attention, eventually prompting the woman, New York-based journalist Kadia Tubman, to share her own account on Instagram.
Now, the Internet is taking sides, trying to answer: who was right and who was wrong?

In his original X post, which has limited visibility, Otto described his seatmate as “very passive aggressive,” accusing her of becoming upset when he used the armrest before takeoff. Bored Panda has a screenshot of the post as well.
He claimed she had attached an earring to her sleeve with the pointed end facing him. According to his account, turbulence subsequently caused the jewelry to jab him.
Otto said he asked her to remove it, but she refused. He also questioned whether her actions were legal.
The photograph showed Tubman wearing a blue sweater, with the earring attached near her elbow. As it circulated, some social media users pointed out that her arm appeared to be positioned within her own seat rather than extending into her neighbor’s space.
Tubman responded publicly on Oct. 18, offering an explanation that challenged several details of Otto’s original complaint.
Woman Shares Her Side of the Airplane Dispute
Writing on Instagram, Tubman said the disagreement began when she took the aisle seat beside Otto, who was already using a laptop and occupying the shared armrest.
She initially allowed him to continue working, but alleged that he repeatedly extended his arm beyond the armrest and made contact with hers.
Tubman said she asked him to move and demonstrated how his movements were disturbing her. Although he briefly adjusted his position, she claimed the contact continued and repeatedly interrupted her sleep.
With approximately 20 minutes remaining before landing, Tubman said she removed an earring and attached it to her sleeve.
She disputed Otto’s claim that turbulence caused the jewelry to poke him, maintaining that the contact occurred because he continued moving his arm into her space.
According to Tubman, the disagreement escalated when Otto photographed her and summoned a flight attendant. She said she offered to discuss the incident with airline personnel after landing, but claimed he walked past her when she attempted to speak with him.
“I got off the plane first and waited for him,” she recounted. “He walked past me. I said, ‘sir, sir.’ He kept walking. I waited for the captain and eventually left.”
Otto offered a different explanation, saying on X that he had to leave for work.
The disagreement has drawn mixed reactions online. Some commenters supported Tubman’s frustration over personal space, while others questioned whether wearing a pointed earring as a deterrent was an appropriate response. Neither account independently establishes exactly how the contact occurred.
How do you think both parties handled the situation?
