An 11-Year-Old Clawed Through a Wall And Jumped From a Window to Escape; His Adoptive Mother Gets 40 Years

An 11-year-old boy locked inside a Georgia bedroom closet did not wait for someone to open the door.

He clawed through the sheetrock with his hands, worked his way through the wall framing, and then jumped from a second-story window to escape the home where prosecutors say he had endured years of abuse.

A neighborhood resident found the boy walking along the street on July 5, 2023. He weighed just 61 pounds and asked for food, according to an account from the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office reported by The Citizen.

More than three years later, his adoptive mother, Chloe Jackson-Jones, pleaded guilty to 20 criminal counts. A Coweta County judge sentenced the 42-year-old to 40 years in prison followed by another 20 years on probation.

Through The Wall

Jackson-Jones adopted the boy in May 2019 when he was 8 years old. Prosecutors said abusive behavior began early and became systematic by 2020, when she removed him from public school for virtual learning and later claimed to homeschool him.

That isolation left fewer people outside the home in regular contact with him.

By July 2023, prosecutors said Jackson-Jones was locking the child inside his bedroom and closet. On the evening he escaped, the boy began tearing through the closet’s sheetrock with his fingers.

After getting through two layers of drywall and the framing, he climbed out of a second-floor window and fled the house. A resident who encountered him called 911 and offered to get him food after learning he was hungry.

Newnan police opened an investigation, and the boy was placed in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services.

A Digital Record

The investigation did not depend solely on the child’s account.

Police recovered photographs and videos from Jackson-Jones’ cellphone that prosecutors said documented years of abuse. The evidence showed the boy being deprived of food, confined for extended periods, forced into stress positions, restrained to chairs, subjected to ice baths, and strangled until he lost consciousness.

FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Assistant District Attorney Jillian Brasfield told the court that doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta formally diagnosed the boy with child torture.

Brasfield said it was the only time she had encountered that diagnosis during her career handling child-abuse cases.

Prosecutors said Jackson-Jones also documented the abuse in photographs and text messages sent to family members. Some showed the boy being forced to hold stress positions for extended periods and clean his own excrement from the floor.

Each of the 17 first-degree cruelty to children counts Jackson-Jones eventually admitted corresponded to a different act of abuse.

Twenty Guilty Pleas

Jackson-Jones pleaded guilty Sept. 30 to aggravated assault by strangulation, two counts of false imprisonment, and 17 counts of first-degree cruelty to children.

The negotiated plea spared the boy from having to testify at trial about what happened inside the home, something prosecutors said factored into their decision to accept the agreement.

Superior Court Judge Markette Baker sentenced Jackson-Jones to 40 years in prison, followed by 20 years of probation.

Prosecutors said the sentence was structured so Jackson-Jones would serve more guaranteed prison time than she might have under a conventional life sentence carrying the possibility of parole after 30 years.
