Now, people are sharing their grief and remembrances of the beloved country icon after her death was announced on Aug. 25, 2026.
According to her family, Parton died at 80 years old after a brief battle with an unnamed cancer. And while many of her devoted fans are still struggling with the news that she has passed, others are celebrating her legacy and talking about how much work she has done for others.
In the 60 years Parton has spent in the spotlight (yes, you read that correctly, 60), she has amassed quite the fortune. According to TV Fandom Lounge, that’s largely thanks to the more than 100 million records she’s sold in her lifetime.
But she didn’t squirrel all the money away for herself—which is another reason so many people loved the songstress—but instead she figured out a way to use her good fortune to help others, securing a personal and professional legacy that’s unlikely to be topped in our lifetime.

Imagine being such a prolific philanthropist that people can’t even list all of the contributions you’ve made. According to TV Fandom Lounge, that’s exactly the scale of Parton’s legacy. What they can share is that the singer personally sent several million dollars to organizations over the last few years of her life, including an impressive $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which was used to fund research during the COVID-19 pandemic.
That money was later credited with helping to lead to the development of Moderna’s vaccine. Two years after that, the outlet says she matched her previous donation to the university, giving them another million for research into pediatric infectious diseases.
Parton Was a Huge Advocate for Early Literacy
Many new parents were happy to get a new book every month through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. According to the organization’s website, registered children receive a free book in the mail each month from the time they register until their fifth birthday.
The singer was prompted to create the library to honor her own father, who had never learned to read. Since 1995, the program has sent out an estimated 300 million books to children, encouraging a lifelong love of reading for so many.
Employees Benefited from Parton’s Generosity, Too
While many who watched her from afar loved her for her music and performances, those who actually worked for her had another reason to appreciate the star. Parton launched a partnership with Herschend Enterprises that allowed her to fully fund the tuition, fees, and material costs for Dollywood Parks & Resorts employees through a program called GROW U.
There were also an additional 149 partially-funded programs that were included in the GROW U initiative, and each of the benefits began on your first day of employment, according to the company website.
Parton’s Husband Died in 2025
The singer was preceded in death by her husband, and the couple had no children of their own, which has left people speculating about what will happen with her estimated $450 million fortune as well as the future of all of her philanthropic programs.
According to Hello!, no details have been released about how Parton’s estate will be split up, but the assumption is that almost everything will be left to charity. Her extended family is also expected to receive her personal effects as well as an undisclosed monetary inheritance. But knowing how beloved Parton was by her tight-knit family, it’s hard to imagine that any sum of money will be a comfort now that she’s gone.
