Grand Canyon is Closing 2 Popular North Rim Roads for Almost 3 Weeks
If you’re heading to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon later this month, two popular scenic roads will be off-limits for a few weeks. Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road will both close beginning October 15.
Grand Canyon National Park announced the closures as it prepares to switch to modified fall operations. Both roads will close at sunset on October 15 and reopen at sunrise on November 3.
Cape Royal Road takes visitors to places like Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook, Angels Window and Cape Royal. Point Imperial Road leads to Point Imperial, one of the North Rim’s highest overlooks.
NPS said the closures are for road repair and rehabilitation work with the Federal Highway Administration. The rest of the North Rim will still be open during that time.

Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road will stay closed for just under three weeks. NPS plans to reopen both at sunrise on November 3.
Visitors can still use other parts of the North Rim while the work is going on. State Route 67 and the North Rim entrance gate are expected to stay open through November 30.
That could change if winter weather shows up early. NPS closes the North Rim for the season after the first major snowstorm or on November 30, whichever comes first.
Some Services End October 15
The North Rim Backcountry Information Center closes for the season at noon on October 15. The General Store closes at 4 p.m. the same day. The campground closes the next morning. The North Rim gas station already closed for the season on September 19.
NPS said no fuel is available inside the North Rim right now. The closest gas, food, and lodging are at Jacob Lake, about 45 miles away.
Several Trails Are Still Closed
The North Kaibab Trail is still closed after a flash flood on August 29 damaged the trail, bridges and other infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon. Bright Angel Point Trail, Widforss Trail, Transept Trail and Uncle Jim Trail are also closed.
Cape Royal Trail, Cape Final Trail, Roosevelt Point Trail and Point Imperial Trail are currently listed as open. NPS recommends bringing enough food, water, fuel, and emergency supplies if you’re heading to the North Rim this fall.
