Woman Unearths Massive Collection of Old Bottles in Her Backyard
Homeowners know to expect the unexpected when they buy an existing home. That’s because homes that have been around for a while have typically had at least one other owner.
Unfortunately, new homeowners usually spend a lot of time cleaning up after the previous owners, either updating their design choices or literally cleaning up after them. That’s what happened to TikToker @thegreenemanor, who found a large collection of trash in her garden.
She discovered that a previous owner had buried a collection of glass bottles in the yard, and she recorded herself as she dug them up. The good news is that this wasn’t just any trash haul, but instead a collection of really cool old bottles.
“As an archaeologist, I’m feeling so many things,” one person commented. “Intrigue, horror, the urge to educate… but mostly just envy! I wish I had a midden in my back yard!”

According to the TikToker, she felt “drawn” to a spot in her yard, where she began digging up the soil. But her progress was soon slowed when she heard the unmistakable sound of a shovel striking glass. Working carefully around the object, @thegreenemanor was able to pull a fully intact glass pitcher out of the hole.
“I knew it was going to be something good,” she said after getting the bottle out. “Wow, first find of the day,” she said, hinting that she knew she would be finding more items in the ground.
After a bit more digging she unearthed several more bottles that were of various sizes and uses, including a bottle that looks like it used to contain alcohol, as well as one that was used for the medication Pertussin.
People Were Amazed by the Finds
Everyone seemed truly excited about what was coming out of the TikToker’s backyard, and people jumped into the comments to share their thoughts, including those who were able to identify some of the bottles.
“Red Cap Refresh-R Germicide was made from the 1930s through the 1970s,” one person wrote. “The label was enamel baked onto the glass. The older ones had a cork with a metal sprinkler top. The newer ones had a screw top with a spray pump. That red cap near the end may have been the spray pump.”
“As a pharmacist, that Pertussin bottle got me so excited,” another added. “Seeing old medicine bottles is always so fascinating.”
The Official Name for the Find is ‘Midden’
One of the first comments on the video was from someone claiming to be an archaeologist. They called the find a “midden,” which EBSCO identifies as an old-fashioned dumping ground. They contain everything from discarded shells to human remains, and they date back as far as 9,600 years ago in some regions.
These valuable sites hold so much information about what life used to be like, which makes it extra cool that the TikToker was able to locate one in her own backyard.
