People Are Going Wild Over This Home’s Zillow Listing ‘If Those Stained Carpets Could Talk’
With today’s home prices, many people spend more time window shopping for homes than they do actually house hunting. That has led to a lot of people casually scrolling real estate listings that they would never actually consider purchasing, prompting a rise in the popularity of social media pages like Zillow Gone Wild.
On Aug. 31, the account posted a new listing on Instagram, saying that the Decatur, Illinois home has had the same owner since it was built 50 years ago. And while having just one owner is typically appealing to many house huntersâpurchasing a single-owner home usually means a clear title and maintenance records from a single sourceâsometimes that means that the previous owner has had a lot of time to make their home look exactly how they want it to.
In the case of this listing, that means lots of wall-to-wall carpeting, heavy drapes, and an unusual layout that some are comparing to a funeral home, while others said the decor looked like it was inspired by the Palace of Versailles.
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or in this case, the homeowner), which means that while this layout may not be for everyone, it was the perfect setup for at least one person.

There was no furniture in the house, so people turned to the features they could see to try and imagine what it looked like while it was occupied. Thanks to the massive chandeliers, 70s-inspired color combinations (lots of avocado and gold), and the odd way the upstairs was laid out, people couldn’t help but compare it to a palace.
“We don’t need Versailles, we have Versailles at home,” one person joked.
Meanwhile, another person thought it looked more like it was used to stage a music video (or a horror movie). “Was this built as a set for a Sia music video directed by Stanley Kubrick,” they asked.
The House Has Been on the Market for a While
The attention the home got from the Instagram post doesn’t seem to have moved the needle much when it comes to offers. According to Realtor.com, the property has been on the market for 69 days. The listing says that the price has even been dropped. It was originally listed on July, 17 at $349,000, but then the price was dropped to $325,000 less than a month later.
According to the listing, it is being sold as the perfect property for someone with “ideas.” That’s because the quirky house seems to come with a lot of room (5,176 square feet, to be exact), and a lot of promise. It even has “amazing lake views.”
Of course, none of that can hold a candle to the fact that the home also comes with a “museum room,” which isn’t something that you see every day. Hopefully the right person happens upon this listing and is able to turn it into their dream home.
