Homeowner Epically Takes Down HOA After Buying Up Tons of Land
Homeowners Associations (HOAs) are often maligned for being power-hungry and overstepping, which is why they have earned a negative name for themselves in recent years. And while there are plenty of people who really like the perks of living in an HOA—like those who appreciate having a clear set of standards that all homeowners must adhere to when it comes to the look of their homes—HOAs are waning in popularity in some neighborhoods (aka, the aggressive ones).
And people who have already had run-ins with their HOAs are likely even less enthusiastic about them, including a couple named Rick and Ginger Francis, who were among a group of people being sued by their HOA. But instead of taking the lawsuit lying down, the couple decided to fight back.
They allegedly did so by purchasing enough properties located within their HOA that they would be able to hold a controlling interest in the board. Their plan? Fire the board that was giving them so much grief.
A meeting was held about the lawsuit, which was shared on Reddit. Now, people can’t stop talking about how everything went down.

According to the hour-long clip that was shared by Redditor ILikeLenexa, the meeting was mostly to discuss budgeting and scheduling issues, which sound like they had been an ongoing point of contention between the HOA board and those who live in the community.
However, things got interesting right before the meeting ended when they brought the lawsuit against the homeowners back up. The lawyer for Mr. and Mrs. Francis brought up an injunction request after several other property owners came forward and requested that the lawsuit be dismissed since the money that was going toward funding it wasn’t accounted for in the HOA’s budget.
That’s when it was announced that the petition that had been filed on behalf of the homeowners contained 36 signatures. More than 20 of which belonged to the homeowners or their subsidiaries after they purchased multiple parcels of property, with most of the rest of the signatures belonging to the other defendants. Around the 52-minute mark, the attorney for the HOA board explained the homeowners’ ultimate plan, saying that they wanted to wield their power to remove the entire board.
However, the homeowner’s attorney maintains that the homeowner isn’t trying to dismiss the HOA board, but is instead looking for a hearing about dismissing the lawsuit against the Francis family.
People Called the Title of the Post Misleading
The video never actually showed the couple firing the HOA board, or even stating definitively that they wanted to dismiss the board, which left many on Reddit feeling disappointed. “Jeez. I watched that whole stupid thing. I fell asleep multiple times. No one gets fired. I wish I had read the comments first,” one person wrote.
Then there were those who questioned the homeowner’s motives. “Though, if you can buy 20 homes, why would you live in an HOA?” another person pondered.
“If I had the money to purchase a controlling amount of an HOA, I wouldn’t live in an HOA! I could afford to live in a much nicer place,” another person added.
While the video ended with a decision to meet again at a future date to work things out, one has to wonder exactly how this situation will be resolved, especially since it seems like there is a shift in the power dynamic between the board and the members.
