Tiny Kitten Rescued From the Side of a Busy Interstate in Hillsborough County
A frightened 5-week-old kitten found stranded on a busy Florida interstate got more than a rescue after a Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy chased him to safety. The tiny kitten ended up with a new name, a new home and a family of his own.
The rescue unfolded on I-275 on Sept. 8 after good Samaritan Donna Watson called for help when she spotted the kitten in distress.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded after Watson reported the tiny black kitten stranded along the southbound interstate.
The rescue was captured on a deputy’s body-worn camera. As she approached the kitten, she could be heard saying, “My precious baby! Oh my goodness. It’s OK.”
The kitten, however, was not ready to be rescued.
The Kitten Was Not Giving Up Easily
The little cat suddenly dashed away and began running alongside the road as vehicles passed nearby. The deputy chased after him, warning, “No, no, no, don’t run out in traffic.”
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrived to help, but the kitten managed to escape again. The deputy eventually caught him as he ran toward her feet and secured him from the dangerous roadway.
HCSO later described the effort as a quick foot pursuit, with the kitten taken into “protective custody.”
Watson was nearby when the deputy finally lifted the kitten to safety. Overcome with emotion, she repeatedly thanked the deputy, saying, “Thank you so much, thank you so much.”
The heartwarming rescue also drew plenty of attention online. One commenter shared, “Did you read him his rights?” before adding, “Right to a new warm home with lots of snuggles, treats & toys.”
Dash Finds a Forever Home
The happiest part of the rescue came after the kitten was safely off the interstate. The deputy and her family decided to adopt him.
They named the kitten Dash, a fitting name for the tiny cat who made rescuers work for their happy ending.
HCSO later shared an update showing that Dash was settling into his new life, writing, “Belly’s full, tail’s happy, and Dash is living his best life.”
For a kitten who began the day alone beside a busy interstate, the rescue ended with something much better than safety. Dash found a forever home.
