When something goes “bump” in the night, the last thing you typically expect to find is a pair of cute bandits exploring your home. That’s exactly what the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said happened when officers responded to a possible break-in. Local ABC News affiliate Denver 7 picked up the story as well, confirming that the bandits were of the four-legged variety.
Fortunately, the Colorado deputies were greeted with a pair of cuddly cubs instead of criminals when they got to the house. A quick-thinking officer started filming the chaos that ensued as the bears ran around the property before additional help arrived.
This bear break-in is just the latest in a series of bear sightings reported in the county this year, as states like California and Colorado have reported fielding an unusually high number of bear-related calls.
Of course, this brief encounter seemed to wrap up without any drama, and we’re sure the pair has already reunited with their worried mama.
A Break-In Was Reported in Roxborough, Colorado
According to the Facebook post, the sheriff’s office sent officers out after getting a call about a possible break-in. “When they got there, they discovered two non-traditional suspects: two curious sibling bear cubs who had climbed through an open window to explore the house,” the caption on the video read.
In the clip, the bears can be seen investigating what appears to be cans of pet food through a window, as the two of them sniffed around a mess which they undoubtedly created while exploring.
“With help from Colorado Parks & Wildlife, the cubs were safely guided back outside without any injuries,” the post continued.
People Gushed Over the Little Cubs
Aside from creating some extra cleaning work for the homeowner, it looks like the bears left without incident, prompting many people online to comment on how adorable they were. “Hungry babies, so cute,” one person wrote.
“Oh man they are tiny,” another person remarked about their size before asking where the mama bear was.
“Food coma then the zoomies, not much different than the grandkids,” another person joked.
Colorado is Seeing an Increased Number of Bear Sightings
According to CBS News, bear sightings are on the rise out West, with places like Douglas County reporting a 155 percent increase in sightings since last year.
It sounds like the ongoing drought is part of the reason why bears are pushing further into residential areas, as the changing conditions in their natural habitat are making it harder for them to find food back home. As such, local officials are warning homeowners to stay bear aware when they are out and about in the community, and to avoid interacting with bears when they spot them in the wild.
