14 Capital Cities That Americans Love Living In

14 Capital Cities That Americans Love Living In

Some state capitals get a bad rap as boring government towns full of paperwork and parking garages. The reality looks a lot different. Many of these cities have booming job markets, top-tier universities, and food scenes that rival much bigger metros. People are moving to them in droves, and the numbers back up why.

To rank the best state capitals to live in, WalletHub looked at all 50 capitals across 48 different measures. Those measures fall into four buckets: affordability, economic well-being, quality of education and health, and quality of life. The data pulls from sources like the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and WalletHub’s own research, so these rankings rest on solid ground.

Below you will find the capitals that score highest for livability, along with a few standouts worth a closer look. Each entry explains what makes the city special and what a potential resident should expect before packing the moving truck.

1. Austin, TX

Austin takes the top spot, and it is easy to see why. The city posts the highest median household income in the country once you adjust for the cost of living, sitting at $93,902. New businesses open here at the second-fastest rate nationwide, which means job opportunities keep multiplying.

Schools rank near the top of the country, and Austin has the fourth-highest share of residents 25 and older holding at least a bachelor’s degree.

Life outside of work is just as strong. Austin has the second-highest life expectancy among capitals and an enormous number of restaurants and attractions per person. One thing to prepare for is the summer heat, which climbs well into the triple digits between June and September. If you can handle the warm months, the rest of the package is hard to beat.

2. Raleigh, NC

Raleigh comes in second, powered by the fourth-highest cost-of-living-adjusted median household income at $84,798. The city is growing fast, ranking near the top of the country for new building permits per person.

That growth points to a place where demand keeps rising, and new neighborhoods keep popping up.

Education runs deep here, too. Roughly 52.9% of residents 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, and the high school graduation rate sits above 87%. Foodies will find plenty of highly rated restaurants, and hockey fans get a treat, since Raleigh ranks as the third-best city in the country for following the sport.

3. Atlanta, GA

Atlanta rounds out the top three with the third-highest cost-of-living-adjusted median household income at $85,352 and the third-highest income growth.

Residents tend to be financially stable, helped along by the eighth-lowest debt-to-earnings ratio in the country. That stability gives people room to build savings and weather surprises.

The city shines for anyone who loves going out. Atlanta ranks at the top of the country for both attractions and nightlife options per person, and it is one of the best spots for affordable, highly rated restaurants. Wellness indicators look good as well, with one of the lowest adult obesity rates and the second-most fitness centers per person nationwide.

4. Madison, WI

Madison earns fourth place thanks to top-tier scores in education and health. The city has the lowest premature-death rate of any capital and the second-highest share of adults with a bachelor’s degree.

Home to a major public university, the city carries a youthful, academic energy that draws students and professionals alike.

Work-life balance is a real selling point here. Madison ranks among the capitals with the shortest average weekly work hours, leaving more time for the lakes, trails, and farmers’ markets the city is known for. The trade-off is winter, which runs long and cold, so a good coat is part of the cost of admission.

5. Boise, ID

Boise lands at number five and stands out for safety and economic strength. It has the second-lowest crime rate among capitals, which makes it a strong pick for families and anyone who values peace of mind.

The local economy ranks third overall for well-being, with steady job growth fueling the city’s rapid rise.

Outdoor lovers will feel right at home. Boise sits close to mountains, rivers, and trails, and it posts the third-lowest premature-death rate in the country, a sign of an active and healthy population. The city has grown popular enough that housing costs have climbed, so budget accordingly if a move is on the horizon.

6. St. Paul, MN

St. Paul takes sixth place and pairs strong affordability with a high quality of life. As one half of the Twin Cities, it gives residents access to a large metro economy while keeping a more grounded, neighborhood feel.

Health outcomes rank among the best in the country, landing in the top five for overall health conditions.

The city offers a deep cultural calendar, from theaters and museums to year-round festivals. Winters are famously harsh here, but locals lean into the season with skating, skiing, and ice festivals that turn the cold into something to celebrate.

7. Lincoln, NE

Lincoln earns seventh place on the strength of its affordability, ranking 11th in the country for keeping costs manageable. Paychecks stretch further here, which appeals to young families and first-time homebuyers looking for room to grow.

The job market is steady, anchored by government, education, and a growing tech presence.

The city carries a friendly, college-town atmosphere, thanks in large part to its big public university. Football Saturdays are a community event, and the slower pace gives residents the breathing room that bigger cities often lack.

8. Bismarck, ND

Bismarck claims the top affordability rank in the entire country, making it one of the most budget-friendly capitals to call home.

Housing costs stay low relative to incomes, and the city posts one of the lowest unemployment rates nationwide. For anyone chasing financial stability, the math here works in your favor.

The trade-off comes in the form of fewer big-city perks, since Bismarck ranks lower for restaurants and attractions per person. What it offers instead is a tight-knit community, short commutes, and an easygoing way of life that many residents would not trade.

9. Denver, CO

Denver lands at ninth and draws younger residents like few other cities. It ranks first in the country for the share of millennial newcomers, a clear sign that people in their twenties and thirties see a future here.

The economy is strong, and the city has the fifth-highest share of adults with a bachelor’s degree.

The mile-high lifestyle revolves around the outdoors, with the Rockies a short drive away and a packed calendar of restaurants and nightlife. Two things to weigh: the crime rate runs higher than most capitals on this list, and the cost of living has risen sharply as the population has boomed.

10. Salt Lake City, UT

Salt Lake City takes tenth place and scores especially well in education and health, ranking fourth in the country for that combined category.

The local economy is on solid footing, ranking 11th for economic well-being, and the tech sector continues to expand and create jobs.

The setting is a major draw. Surrounded by mountains, the city puts world-class skiing and hiking within easy reach. Air quality can dip during winter inversions, so it is worth understanding the seasonal pattern before settling in.

11. Oklahoma City, OK

Oklahoma City ranks 11th overall and stands out for affordability, landing third in the country on that measure.

Combined with the ninth-best economic well-being score, the city offers a rare mix of low costs and real job opportunities. Your dollar goes a long way here, especially when it comes to housing.

The city has poured serious investment into its downtown over the past two decades, adding restaurants, parks, and a thriving arts district. Where it falls short is education and health, ranking 42nd, so families weighing schools and care options should research specific neighborhoods carefully.

12. Nashville, TN

Nashville rounds out the main list at number 12, fueled by the second-best economic well-being score in the country.

The job market is hot, the population keeps climbing, and the city has become a magnet for people relocating from pricier metros. Tennessee’s lack of a state income tax adds to the appeal.

Music City lives up to its name with a nightlife and live-music scene few cities can match. The flip side is a higher crime rate, ranking among the highest of any capital, so safety is worth factoring into where you choose to live.

13. Concord, NH

Concord makes a strong case beyond the top 12, ranking 14th overall and first in the country for safety with the lowest crime rate of any capital. It also ties for the lowest unemployment rate nationwide, which speaks to a stable and reliable local economy.

For people who value calm and security, few places compare. New England charm runs through the city, from historic architecture to easy access to mountains and the coast.

It is a smaller capital, so anyone craving a big nightlife scene may find it quiet, but that is exactly the appeal for many residents.

14. Boston, MA

Boston ranks 23rd overall, but it earns a spot here for reasons the overall number hides. The city posts the second-best quality of life in the country and ranks sixth for education and health, anchored by some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

It also has the lowest debt-to-income ratio of any capital, a sign of financially healthy households. The catch is affordability, where Boston ranks near the bottom.

Housing and overall costs run steeply, so the city makes the most sense for those with high incomes or careers in its booming education, medical, and tech industries. For the right person, the history, walkability, and culture more than justify the price.

Finding the Right Capital for You

The best capital depends entirely on what matters most in your life. Someone chasing a high-paying tech job will gravitate toward Austin, Raleigh, or Denver, while a family on a budget might find Bismarck or Oklahoma City a much better fit. Safety seekers have Concord and Boise, and culture lovers will gravitate toward Boston or Atlanta.

A smart move is to rank your own priorities first, then match them against the strengths and trade-offs above. Pull up cost-of-living calculators, browse local listings, and if you can, visit during the season that worries you most, like an Austin summer or a Madison winter. Doing that homework now saves a lot of regret later, and it turns a big decision into a confident one.
