9 DIY Projects That Add Instant Charm to Your Home

One of the best perks of owning your home is you can make it into your dream home, one DIY project at a time.

If you’re looking to add charm to your home, there are so many ways you can do that. From adding texture and artistic elements to your walls to creating little spaces for yourself, you can turn your home into something truly unique and a reflection of your personal style. It’s all about the little touches that bring your home to life.

If you’ve got a few hours — or a weekend — to spare, these are just a few projects you can tackle.

Reupholster Furniture

Reupholstering your furniture is one way to bring it back to life and add a charming touch. The beauty of this DIY project is that you can choose any fabric you want for the upholstery.

You can pick a theme that coordinates with your existing decor, or change it all up to create a warm and inviting feel to your space.

Hand Paint Floors

If you’re looking for a unique touch, consider hand painting your floors. It might seem like an odd thing to do, but it can impart personality and charm to just about any room.

You can do this with tiles or linoleum, if that’s what you have, but I wouldn’t recommend doing it with hardwood floors, simply because they’re gorgeous and charming in their own right.

Create an Accent Wall

Accent walls add dimension to any room. They create a focal point that you can use to create a customized look rather than have the same color on all walls.

For a charming feel, go with mid-range colors: not too dark, not too light. Think country cottage colors like earth tones and deeper pastels.

Create a Coffee Nook

If you’re a coffee aficionado like me, chances are you have a set station in your kitchen for brewing that luscious cup of joe. Why not take it one step further and create an actual coffee nook?

Use a section of your countertop for your coffee machine, and add a shelf above for your accessories like your mugs, coffee grounds, and sugar bowls. You can take it one step further and add wallpaper just to that section.

Add Molding

Adding molding to your home is a great way to impart some charm. Many of the older style homes have it, and molding has become increasingly popular over the past decade as well.

Adding molding to your home involves a bit more labor and know-how, but it’s possible to install over the course of a weekend. You could go room by room or choose one to set it apart.

Add Texture to Your Walls

If you look at older homes developed with a charming motif, you’ll notice many have a textured wall. This is easy to do with compound, for one, but if you want a truly unique look, hang empty picture frames on your walls and paint over them with the same color as your wall.

It will instill a bold, yet charming look that will have people wondering how you created the effect.

Hang Historic Pediments

Historic pediments are those decorative architectural features that look like they belong back in the Grecian era. They come in many different colors, including some with a distressed finish for a classic look.

You can easily find these pediments in thrift stores, home goods stores, or even at Home Depot.

Hang Wallpaper

Hanging wallpaper is another quick project you can do to add some charm to your home. Start off small, like in a bathroom or on an accent wall.

You can find many colors and patterns in both peel-and-stick and traditional formats. Peel-and-stick can be easier but is less forgiving, unless you buy the removable kind.

Add Sconces for Lighting

Sconces can add a great deal of charm, especially if you place them strategically, such as on opposite sides of a doorway entry or in the hallway, to create some ambient lighting.

The good thing with sconces is there are many different designs you can choose from, whether you’re shopping on a budget or want a luxe option.
